Granular Herbicides

Granular Herbicides

Granular herbicides are a form of pesticide designed to control invasive weeds from emerging on a landscape. Rather than being in liquid form and needing to be sprayed, Granule herbicides come in dry form and are blended with an organic material that will dissolve in water.

Granular herbicides are primarily used for pre-emergent control of weeds, meaning they control weeds that have not sprung up from the ground yet. The active ingredient in these herbicides bind near the surface of the soil, creating a protective barrier that prevents weeds from sprouting.

Granular herbicides are easy to apply and can provide a long period of control. They control a broad spectrum of key nursery and landscape weeds, freeing you from the annoying task of hand-pulling weeds.

Granular herbicides are easily applied to a target area via the help of a handheld or broadcast spreader which can evenly spread onto a landscape. It’s important to note that once a herbicide is applied, it must be watered in with at least half an inch of water.

Our Recommendations

Pre-emergent

  • Nitrophos Barricade - Nitrophos Barricade is a granular pre-emergent herbicide. This product is a flexible, broad-spectrum herbicide that can be used on many different grass types. It is used to prevent the germination and growth of grassy and broadleaf weeds in turf and gardens.

Post Emergent

  • 15-5-10 Weed & FeedSolutions 15-5-10 Weed & Feed is a granulated combination of fertilizer and weed killer. It promotes healthy turfgrass growth and combats weed growth at the same time. It can be easily applied with the help of a granular spreader.

User Guide

Tools Needed

  • Granular Herbicide of Choice
  • Granular Spreader
  • PPE Safety Equipment

Step 1: Prep Your Lawn For Application

Mowing grass prior to using Granular Herbicides

Before applying granular herbicides, it is important to prep your lawn for the application. For the granular herbicide application to be effective, it needs bind to the soil surface. You’ll want to mow your lawn first and then water your lawn a day or two before application.

You should also check if the soil temperature is conducive for herbicide applications. Herbicides should be laid out before the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees in the Spring. You can check the soil temperature with the help of a soil thermometer which you can stick into the soil to read the temperature.

Step 2: Load Granular Herbicide Into Spreader

Following the label directions, load your spreader with the proper amount of granules for the area to be treated. Make sure the spreader is calibrated well and is at a setting that is best to get even coverage on the area that needs treatment.

Before applying granular herbicides, measure the square footage of the area you want to treat. You can do this by multiplying the length and width together (length x width = square footage).

To apply Nitrophos Barricade, you may be using anywhere from 1.5 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet depending on your turf species. For ornamentals, the application rate will be between 2.5 and 5.94 pounds per 1,000 sq. feet. For example, if you have perennial ryegrass on a 3,000 sq. ft. lawn and the labeled rate for your turf is 2 pounds per 1,000 sq. ft., you will need to load 6 pounds of Barricade into your spreader to cover your entire yard.

Step 3: Apply To Your Lawn

Broadcast the granules uniformly using your spreader type. You may need to conduct 2 perpendicular passes to get uniform coverage. If any granules land on your driveway, sidewalk, or street, sweep the product back onto your lawn. Activate the granules by watering your lawn with at least 0.5 inches of water for best results.

Step 4: Check Your Results.

Regularly monitor your lawn for any issues and reapply your granular herbicide as needed.

Things To Consider

  • Please make sure to read the label before applying any granular herbicide for safety precautions, mixing rates and application rates.
  • Wear personal protective clothing prior to applying granular herbicides for your safety.
  • Handheld broadcast spreaders are the best product for granular herbicides.
  • There are three factors to ensure you uniformly apply granular herbicides: walking pace, rate control gate and crank speed.

Key Takeaways

  • Granular herbicides are an effective and long-term affordable solution to invasive weeds on a landscape.
  • Our recommended granular herbicide products are Nitrophos Barricade, Solution 15-5-10 Weed & Feed and Pramitol 5PS Industrial Weed Killer.
  • Calculate the square footage of your treatment area to calculate the amount of product needed for control.
  • Apply herbicide with a spreader at an even pace in a grid-like fashion so there is uniform coverage.
