Keith's Pro Tips

"Using Carbentrazone against problem weeds is effective, but timing is especially crucial to attaining the best possible results. The active ingredient is best suited to spring and fall applications because its activity is greatest at temperatures under 75 degrees Fahrenheit."

Carfentrazone

Carfentrazone (also known fully as Carfentrazone-ethyl) is an active ingredient in herbicides used to kill broadleaf weeds. It is a contact herbicide applied as a foliar spray. It is also an effective selective herbicide that causes death by targeting plant cells.

Solutions Pest & Lawn stocks quality herbicides containing Carfentrazone. On this page, you can learn some interesting facts about sulfentrazone, how it works, and its benefits, as well as shop our recommended products based on carfentrazone.

What is Carfentrazone?

Applying Carefentrazone to plants

Carfentrazone-ethyl is a contact herbicide primarily used in agricultural settings to control broadleaf and sedge weeds in various grains and crops.  Carfentrazone is applied as a foliar spray and is systemic.

Carfentrazone is absorbed through the leaves of the targeted plant. The active ingredient's translocation after absorption is limited, meaning the herbicide moves very little from the site applied to another part of the plant.

Carfentrazone is available at several different concentration ratios and in various formulations such as micro-emulsion, emulsifiable concentrate, water-dispersible granule, and water-soluble granule.

Carfentrazone is often used in combination with several different herbicide active ingredients. For example, It is often used in combination with Metsulfuron for agricultural herbicides to control broadleaf weeds in winter and spring grains and barley.

How Does Carfentrazone Work?

Mode of Action

Carfentrazone disrupts plant membranes by halting the action of a necessary part of plant development known as protoporphyrinogen oxidase, resulting in cell death.

Benefits of Carfentrazone

Several characteristics make Carfentrazone-based products stand out from the more traditional broadleaf herbicides. For example, it works quickly: you may see browning of weed foliage as soon as 1 to 2 days and potentially a complete kill in about a week. This contrasts with competitor herbicides, which cause a gradual “melting away” of weeds over a longer time.

Carfentrazone is best used to control invasive weeds or vegetation on agricultural, commercial, or residential sites. The label provides a full list of approved areas.

Drawbacks of Carfentrazone

Carfentrazone needs to be mixed with a surfactant for best results. There are some common broadleaf weeds against which Carfentrazone is ineffective. You must check the label to see which weeds work best against weeds.

Do not use Carfentrazone for weeds that are not specifically labeled to be controlled by the active ingredient.

Is Carfentrazone Safe?

Carfentrazone is safe to apply according to label directions. Wear the proper safety gear and equipment when handling this product; you have nothing to worry about when applying it to your lawns.

What To Expect

Selective 2,4-D spraying

An application of Carfentrazone begins harming the plant as soon as the target weeds are contacted by the chemical. It takes approximately 72 hours to kill off most unwanted weeds if caught in early stages, 1 to 4 inches in height. Repeat applications may be necessary if a weed is very persistent or well-established.
