Keith's Pro Tips

"While Sethoxydim is a post-emergent herbicide, timing will still be important to get the desired results in weed control. Spray weeds early when they are small. Delaying application until the weed matures will make the weed harder to control, which means more repeat applications and wasted product."

Sethoxydim

Weeds such as Crabgrass, annual ryegrass, and bahiagrass can be annoying on residential lawns, but they can be especially troubling to agricultural farmers and land managers who are trying to grow fruit and vegetable crops. This is when a herbicide like Sethoxydim may be necessary to kill the weeds but leave the crops unharmed.

On this page, you can learn more about the active ingredient Sethoxydim, its mode of action, and its benefits. You can also access this page to shop our recommended products that contain Sethoxydim.

What is Sethoxydim?

Sethoxydim is an active ingredient used as a post-emergent herbicide to control certain grassy weeds. It is a selective herbicide from the cyclohexanone family of chemicals. It was originally designed for use in agricultural settings to treat perennial and annual grasses found in fruit and vegetable crops, fields, and ornamentals. It is mainly formulated as an emulsifiable concentrate.

How Does Sethoxydim Work?

Mode of Action

Sethoxydim kills target plants by acting as a lipid inhibitor. By interfering with the biosynthesis of lipids in grasses, the target weeds are unable to properly develop before eventually succumbing to the effects of the active ingredient and dying.

Benefits of Sethoxydim

Sethoxydim is a selective herbicide, meaning that when applied, it will only affect labeled target weeds and will not harm non-target vegetation like fruits and vegetables. This is especially useful in agricultural settings where only the weeds are killed, and the crops are spared.

Drawbacks of Sethoxydim

Sethoxydim is not effective in controlling broadleaf weeds and woody plants. It is also ineffective in eliminating sedges. Do not use Sethoxydim if you are looking to target invasive broadleaf plants.

Is Sulfentrazone Safe?

Sethoxydim is safe to use when applied according to label directions.

It is recommended that when mixing and/or applying Sethoxydim, proper personal protective equipment (PPE) (Gloves, protective eyewear, long-sleeved clothing) be worn. Please refer to the label for detailed safety instructions and restrictions.

What To Expect

Sethoxydim herbicide products can be applied as a broadcast or spot treatment. The best time to apply the product is in the early spring, with a repeat application in the Summer for season-long control. It should take 7 to 10 days for target weeds to succumb to the herbicide's effects.
