Keith's Pro Tips

"Fipronil is part of the Phenylpyrazole family of insecticides and was first made to address termite infestations. A great method of termite control involves digging a termite trench around the perimeter of the structure and pouring a Fipronil solution in the trench and covering it back up with mud. We recommend using Taurus SC for the job."

The pest control industry is always looking to develop new chemical formulas that help to kill problematic pests faster, easier and more effectively than what is currently out there. A relatively new pesticide chemical class that is becoming more widely-used is known as Phenylpyrazole.

On this page, you will learn about Phenylpyrazole, how it works, and why it is so effective. Here you can also shop the top Phenpyrazole products we have available.

What is a Phenylpyrazole?

Phenylpyrazole is a newer class of chemical pesticides that is used widely as a broad-spectrum insecticide in the pest control industry. The chemical was developed to combat increasing resistance from target insects against common pesticides used for their control.

By far the most popular type of Phenylpyrazole active ingredient is Fipronil. Due to its effectiveness, Fipronil is used to treat many insects such as fleas, ants and termites. It is also used in some brands of gel baits to kill cockroach infestations. For many years, Fipronil was the only commercially available active ingredient in the Phenylpyrazole class. More have made their way onto the market, such as products containing Pyriprole, which is used in some topical flea medications.

This versatile active has been processed in many forms such as insecticide concentrates, foaming aerosols, gel baits and pet sprays.

How Does Phenylpyrazole Work?

Phenylpyrazole are similar to another class of pesticide known as neonicotinoids in that they both kill insects by disrupting essential processes in the central nervous system and cause overstimulation.

While neonicotinoids mimic nicotine which poses as a neurotransmitter to attack the nervous system, Phenylpyrazole blocks the proper functioning of an important nerve cell called GABA receptors. This blockage leads to the target insect being overstimulated so they lose control, experience seizures, tremors and convulsions that eventually cause the insect to die.

Benefits of Phenylpyrazole

Phenylpyrazole is an effective chemical pesticide as it works quickly to control target pests and remains effective for longer than older chemicals. Phenylpyrazole also combats insect resistance which makes it such a popular chemical ingredient in pesticide products. They also are typically effective at lower use rates, meaning less active needs to be applied leading to lower cost per application.

Phenylpyrazole is versatile, targeting a broad-spectrum of different insects and can come in various formulations that can be useful in different situations. Finally, Phenylpyrazole is convenient due to its long residual effect, making it so you don't have to reapply often to get continued control and protection.

Drawbacks of Phenylpyrazole

Pheylpyrazole product do work quickly but they are not an instant kill. Affected insects die within 3 to 5 days. While Phenylpyrazole ingredients like Fipronil are effective against problematic pests, the pesticide can also be harmful to beneficial insects and people if applied improperly or in an area that is sensitive. Make sure you follow the label carefully for proper application directions.

Is Phenylpyrazole Safe?

Phenylpyrazole is safe to use when applied according to label directions. While the toxicity to humans and pets is on the low side, it is still important to wear the proper PPE in the form of gloves, protective eyewear, and a safety mask when mixing or applying the product. Follow the label carefully and keep pets and children away from treated areas until the product has been allowed to dry.
