This page is a general birds control guide. Using the products and methods suggested you can get control of any birds species. The bird category pages give additional information on the different species. Follow these guides and use the recommended products and we guarantee 100% control of all bird species.

Birds are a frequent issue for both homeowners and businesses and are notorious for damaging property and creating many health hazards. It is estimated that Birds can transmit more than 60 diseases to humans. Their droppings are highly acidic and can deteriorate metal and paint.

The main culprits considered as pest birds are pigeons, starlings, and house sparrows, who defecate and nest close to businesses and homes. These birds are known to hang around roofs, awnings, windows, patios, window sills, rain gutters, and high up in structures.

Birds will tend to nest and perch away from predators high up in structures or inside small slits that offer them protection. If you are dealing with invasive birds trespassing on your property, our DIY guide below will show you how to get rid of birds humanely without harming them.

Identification

birds how to get rid of birds identification

While anyone can easily identify birds, there are many species of birds and their identification can become tricky. Misidentification can lead to using the wrong treatment methods, which can result in a waste of your time and money. It is easier to identify birds by the places where they nest or perch.

  • Indoors bird infestations are rare. But if they happen, it's usually Starlings and House Sparrows who have constructed a nest in an outdoor crack or crevice and have managed to get inside. Starlings can be black or brown in color and may have numerous white dots. If they're dark in color, their feathers will shine with green and purple iridescent hues. Starlings measure about 7 to 9 inches. House sparrows are smaller, about 5 to 7 inches, have pink feet, and their plumage is brown with white and black patterns.
  • Outdoors is where most birds nest and perch. In urban cities and suburban neighborhoods Pigeons, Sparrows, and Starlings will happily nest in window sills, rain gutters, dryer and attic vents, and in eaves and soffits. Pigeons measure about 11 inches in length, are grey in color, and have two black bands on their wings.

If you cannot determine the exact species of birds you're dealing with, then continue on with this guide, it will treat both indoor and outdoor bird issues.

Inspection

Once you have are certain that you are dealing with a bird problem, you can then proceed with inspection. During this phase, you will need to know if there is a nest in your structure and the areas in your property where birds perch or are active. Grab binoculars and inspect during the daytime when birds are most active and visible.

Where To Inspect

Indoors looks for small openings in wall voids. Outdoors look in your roof, in eaves, soffits, fascias, rain gutters, window sills, vents, and chimneys. If you're a business owner look in your awnings, window sills, and below and inside signage. In the yard, look in trees, shrubs, branches, and tall structures.

What To Look For

You're looking for birds, nests, and droppings. Grab binoculars and inspect their flight patterns, are they simply perching, or is there a crack or crevice they are using as a nest? Once you have confirmed their perching or nesting sites this is where you will apply treatment.

Treatment

Once you have confirmed bird activity it is time to begin treatment. Remember that you must read all the product labels and follow their application instructions, and stay safe by wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

Step 1 - Outdoor Treatment

bird spikes

We will use two products for outdoor treatment, 4 The Birds and Bird-Flite Bird Control Spikes. 4 The Birds is a chemical repellent that will burn and irritate the birds' feet and force them to move. 4 The Birds will continue to work for up to a year. The bird spikes will physically prevent the birds from landing near your structure. You can use both products or either one, the choice is yours. If you found a nest, physically remove it before applying treatment.

4 The Birds

Before using 4 The Birds clean the use sites of any excess dirt, droppings, dust, or debris. Use a caulking gun to apply 4 The Birds. Check the label for detailed instructions on how to apply. Generally, you should apply beads that are ½ an inch wide and ½ an inch high. Apply along edges, roofs, and awnings and other bird perching sites.

Bird-Flite Bird Control Spikes

Bird-Flite Bird Control Spikes are easy to use. They come with pre-made holes where screws or nails can be inserted, or they can easily be placed with strong adhesive glue. You can even cut them in half to place them in small ledges. Simply place fasten them with either glue or screws and place them in perching sites.

Prevention

bird prevention

After you have removed or repelled the birds from your property, you want to make sure they don't make a comeback. Here are some preventative measures to take to lessen the chances of birds roosting on your property again.

  • Start by not using bird feeders. Bird feeders will attract many songbirds, but in many instances, they will start to nest close to the feeders, which usually means your structure or property. They usually nest close to a food source, so protect your garden with wire mesh to prevent them from eating your fruits or vegetables.
  • Maintaining a yearly pest control program can go a long way in getting rid of insects, a food source for birds. Apply Valar Plus Bifenthrin Granules using a hand spreader or push-type broadcast spreader around your yard to address insects so Birds will not have anything to eat on your property. For general pest control in lawns use Valar Plus Bifenthrin Granules at a rate of 2.3 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.
  • Do your best to seal off any openings in eaves, soffits, fascias and any small slit where birds might nest. Make sure all the vents and chimneys in your home have the appropriate screening to prevent birds from nesting inside.
  • And finally, if dealing with a large infestation, consider using a live trap like Kage-All Pigeon Trap, and relocating your problem birds.
