Keith's Pro Tips

"No matter if you are a professional or a DIYer, having a chemical spill kit is essential for responsible and safe pest control. In the event of a spill, a spill kit will help you contain the spill, and keep yourself and others safe from hazardous materials."

The Best Spill Kits For Pesticides

Even under ideal circumstances, using the best safety precautions possible, a spill can still happen. This is why you should have a spill kit handy. A spill kit is a set of equipment needed to properly clean and dispose of chemical spills.

At Solutions Pest & Lawn, we offer a professional grade spill kit that contains a full array of absorbent pads and socks as well as the proper safety equipment so you can clean up any spill properly and safely.

In the event of a spill, before anything else, put on protective equipment, especially if you’re unsure of the toxicity level of the spilled chemical. Then control the source of the spill and put absorbant cellulose-filled socks around the borders of the spill. Soak the chemical up with absorbent materials, and dispose of any chemical wastes properly.

Recommendation

Spill Kit

No matter the experience level of a DIY pest controller, it is highly recommended that a spill kit is on hand at all times. If you are a professional applicator, it’s required. In either case, we’ve got you covered with our Universal Truck Spill Kit.

Each kit comes in a clearly marked, chemical resistant bag and contains 16 absorbent polypropylene pads, 2 absorbent cellulose filled socks, 1 roll of caution tape, and a tie. Each kit is rated to clean up to 10 gallons of liquid. For larger spills, professional help may be required.

User Guide

A chemical spill cleanup may seem daunting, but it’s not complicated to deal with. Follow these steps and you’ll be done in no time at all.

Step 1: Put On Protective Gear

There’s no need to take a chance, especially if you’re unsure of the toxicity of the chemical or chemicals in question. Make sure to wear gloves, eye protection, proper footwear, and, if needed, a respirator.

Step 2: Stop The Source Of The Spill

There’s no point trying to contain and clean up the spill if its source is still uncontrolled. Right any containers that have fallen over or if there is a leak in a small container, place it in a larger container such as a drum or bag.

Step 3: Contain The Spill

Once the source of the spill is under control it’s time to work on the spill itself. Remove any items in the area of the spill and put aside for cleaning or place in disposal bags for disposal if desired. If the spill is spreading, diking tubes should be placed around it to prevent the spread. The goal is to keep the spill in as small an area as possible.

Step 4: Absorb The Spill

Cover the entire site of the spill with absorbent materials such as the absorbent polypropylene pads and the cellulose-filled socks found in our Universal Truck Spill Kit. Allow the spill to fully soak into the materials.

Step 5: Disposal

Gather all the used absorbent materials and place them in disposal bags. Depending on the chemical, final disposal procedures may vary. Our Universal Truck Spill Kit contains instructions on how to properly dispose of materials and each pesticide label must also contain a section on pesticide disposal. Never throw toxic chemical wastes in the trash.

Step 6: Aftermath

Once the spill is dealt with and any hazardous materials are disposed of, there may still be some containers, equipment, or vehicles that the spill came into contact with that you still hope to reuse. To clean any remnants of pesticides that may linger on such objects, a solution of chlorine bleach, dishwasher detergent, and water should suffice.

Inspection and Maintenance

Spill kits belong to the peculiar category of items that you buy and hope never to have to use. In an ideal world, no spillage ever occurs and our spill kit simply waits wherever you have put it. However, it is important that you ensure that should the need arise, your spill kit is ready and waiting. That means inspecting it for readiness on a regular basis at least once a year.

Step 1: Unpack the Kit

Open your spill kit and lay the items out and take inventory. Take note of any items you’re missing to secure proper replacements.

Step 2: Check Items

Go through each item and inspect it for defects, damage, or any issue that may reduce its effectiveness. Ensure you still have enough absorbent materials to deal with whatever size spill is most likely to occur in your situation and that they have not been soiled by water or other liquid contamination during storage. Check your safety equipment for any damage such as tears in gloves or an unraveled band on safety goggles. Check the disposal bags for tears or any other damage as well.

Step 3: Repack the Kit

Once you are satisfied that all materials are accounted for and in good condition, it’s time to repack and stow the spill kit. Place the items back in whatever container your spill kit is kept in. Orderly packing is key to quick and easy use should the need arise. Make sure that if you need it, your kit can be used at a moment’s notice.

Parts

In general, a spill kit has three things: safety equipment, absorbent materials, and disposal bags.

Safety Equipment

Anything you need to make sure your safe around any chemicals you may be handling. In most cases where liquid pesticides are concerned, a sturdy pair of rubber gloves and some eye protection should be used. In the case of the Universal Truck Spill Kit, there is no safety gear that comes with the kit and will need to be purchased separately.

Absorbent Materials

To clean up serious chemical spills you need heavy-duty absorbent materials such as the 16 absorbent Polypropylene pads and 2 absorbent cellulose filled socks that come in our Universal Truck Spill Kit.

Disposal Bags

For dangerous pesticides, a black trash bag won’t suffice. Some kits contain clearly marked heavy-duty HazMat disposal bags, so you can be sure that once that spill is soaked up you have the tools needed to keep it that way.
