What is Oryzalin?

Oryzalin is a selective, pre-emergent, herbicide used for the control of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds. It can also control weeds on residential and commercial lawns as well as woody shrubs and vines in grapes, berries and orchard crops, including both fruits and nuts. 

In its original form, Oryzalin is a bright yellowish-orange powder and is sold in a variety of different formulations such as granular, wettable powder, water-dispersible granules, emulsifiable concentrate, flowable concentrate and liquid.

How Does Oryzalin Work?

Oryzalin herbicides work via the disruption of plant microtubules, which are crucial building blocks of plants. Oryzalin halts the growth of plant cells so that weeds are unable to develop as usual.

Oryzalin is an effective pre-emergent herbicide that can work on both cool-season and warm-season grasses. It also has excellent residual protection, delivering extended control of problem weeds such as Barnyardgrass, Foxtail, Goosegrass, Pigweed and Purslane all season long.

Drawbacks of Oryzalin

It is important to note that since Oryzalin is a pre-emergent herbicide, it will not kill weeds but rather only prevents the weed seeds from growing. As a result, if you want continued control, you will have to reapply the product annually or the weed seed will eventually begin to germinate come growing season.

Do not use Oryzalin when your target weed has already sprouted from the soil. This is when you should use a post-emergent instead for control.
