Keith's Pro Tips

"When spraying pyrrole products, you will have to exhibit some patience as pests will not die right away. You should see results within 2 to 3 days. Apply in 14 to 21 day intervals until your pest problem is gone."

Pyrrole

There are many pesticides that are being developed to address insect problems with the aim being to improve upon older chemicals and curb resistance. Pyrroles are a relatively new class of pest control chemicals that work effectively in treating a broad spectrum of insect infestations.

On this page, you will learn about Pyrrole, how it works, its benefits and how you can apply it safely. Here you can also shop Pyrrole-based products we have in stock.

What is Pyrrole?

Pyrrole is an organic chemical compound used in many common pest control products as an active ingredient. This substance was developed as an answer to insect infestations that began to show resistance to pyrethroids, a class of chemical that mimics the effects of natural pyrethrins.

Pyrroles usually work best when combined with other chemical active ingredients. Chlorfenapyr is the only commercially available active ingredient currently that is classified as a pyrrole.

How Does Pyrrole Work?

Pyrrole works by disrupting an insect's ability to produce energy in their mitochondria. The lack of new energy causes the insect to be unable to perform crucial functions like feeding, movement, and grooming to where they eventually die. Essentially, the pyrrole compound uses the insect's metabolism against them, resulting in self-destruction once the substance spreads throughout their body.

When a target insect comes in contact with the pyrrole and it begins to spread, it starts to disturb the mitochondria which acts as a furnace for insects. As the insect depletes its own energy carrying on its usual actions, the pyrrole disturbs the mitochondria so new energy doesn't form and the insect eventually drops dead.

Benefits of Pyrrole

Pyrrole is viewed as an effective alternative to treating insects that become resistant to conventional insecticides and pyrethroids by featuring an entirely different mode of action. Most insecticides commonly are a neurotoxin and attack the pests nervous system. Pyrrole affects the insect's ability to produce energy.

Pyrrole's are also non-repellent so a target insect will not be able to detect that the chemical is designed for their harm. It works slowly, so they will not realize that the pyrrole is killing them until it is too late.

Drawbacks of Pyrrole

While Pyrrole is effective when applied, it does take some time for the insect to succumb to its effect. If you want a fast kill, a pyrrole-based pesticide may not be the right option for you.

Is Pyrrole Safe?

Pyrrole is safe to use when applied according to label directions. It is important to wear the proper PPE in the form of gloves, protective eyewear, and a safety mask when mixing or applying the product. Follow the label carefully and keep pets and children away from treated areas until the product has been allowed to dry.

What To Expect

Pyrrole application around perimeter of a home

After applying Pyrrole insecticides, pest should die within a few days of exposure. Pyrrole products also often have a residual effect that will last 14 to 21 days.

Pyrethrins are not an instant kill and could take up to 72 hours for an effected pest to die from the mode of action of the chemical.
