What is a Neonicotinoid?

Neonicotinoids represent a class of chemicals that are designed to mimic the properties of the addictive chemical nicotine. In fact, the term neonicotinoid means "new nicotine-like insecticide" when broken down literally. This popular chemical has taken the pest control industry by storm with many different product variants.

Several of the more popular neonicotinoid active ingredients include: acetamiprid, dinotefuran, imidacloprid, Thiamethoaxam and others.

How Do Neonicotinoids Work?

As its name suggests, Neonicotinoids behave much like nicotine, effecting the target insect's central nervous system, binding to nerve cells and causing overstimulation and disruption. Insects exposed to neonicotinoids show symptoms of spasming and loss of control with bodily functions, paralysis and then eventually death.

Neonicotinoids are a very effective method of pest control, working quickly to kill pests that ingest the product. It is also water-soluble, allowing the insecticide to be applied to soil and be systemically taken up by plants.

Neonicotinoids are great for attacking sap-sucking and plant-chewing insects. They are safer to use than most insecticides in that they are more selective to insects so there is less risk of harm to animals and humans.

Finally, neonicotinoids are known for their long residual activity, remaining effective for weeks to months after application.

Drawbacks of Neonicotinoid

The biggest drawback of Neonicotinoids are that they can be harmful to beneficial insects, namely honeybees. While their systemic activity is good for problem insects, it's bad for pollinators so you have to be extra careful where you apply it.

Is Neonicotinoid Safe?

Neonicotinoid is safe to use when applied according to label directions. While the toxicity to humans and pets is on the low side, it is still important to wear the proper PPE in the form of gloves, protective eyewear, and a safety mask when mixing or applying the product. Follow the label carefully and keep pets and children away from treated areas until the product has been allowed to dry.

Exercise caution in where you apply the treatment so it doesn't harm honeybees and other insects that are beneficial to the environment.

Neonicotinoids work quickly to affect insects that have ingested the chemical. Pests can die within an hour to 1 day. Depending on the product, it can have a residual effect of 7 days to as long as 90 days.
