Systemic Fungicide

Systemic Fungicides

Fungus growing on grass

A systemic fungicide is a chemical product designed to eliminate common fungal diseases from a plant and restoring the plant back to health. Unlike contact fungicides which only work on the surface of the plant, systemic fungicides can be absorbed and travel through the plant tissue upwards and downwards to find and eliminate the disease present.

There are a number of advantages systemic fungicides have over contact fungicide. Aside from its ability to move through the plant, it has a longer-lasting effect, is less harmful to the environment, and the chemical inside the plant is less likely to degrade over time.

Systemic fungicides are very easy to apply. Follow the label directions in properly mixing your selected systemic fungicide in a pump sprayer and apply it to your plants making sure the entire surface is coated. You then reapply periodically to keep the plant protected from the threat of fungal diseases.

Step 1: Identify the Fungus and Check Conditions.

Fungal disease on lawn in need of systemic fungicide

Before proceeding with fungicide applications, it is best to know which lawn fungus you have as some fungicide products work better than others depending on the disease and plant type. Observe the symptoms of the area where the fungal disease is growing, as well as the conditions of the area that is making it possible for the disease to take hold (too much moisture, drought, compacted soil etc.).

Step 2: Mix the Fungicide

Mixing Patch Pro Fungicide in a handheld sprayer

Be sure you are using a sprayer that has not been used for herbicides or other pesticides as this can affect results and even damage the plant you are trying to eliminate the disease from.

Before mixing, determine how much product you need to cover the treatment area by calculating the square footage. To do this, measure and multiply the area length times the width (length x width = square footage).

Patch Pro can be mixed at a rate between 0.5 to 4 fluid ounces per 1,000 square feet in a gallon of water depending on which disease you are targeting.

For example, if you have a yard that is 2,500 square feet, you would need to mix 1.5 to 10 ounces in 2.5 gallons of water. Fill a sprayer halfway with water, add the measured amount of Patch Pro and fill the rest of the way with water. Agitate the sprayer until well-mixed and you'll be ready to apply.

Step 3: Apply Fungicide To Infected Plants

Apply the fungicide mixture to the plant to be treated. The key is to get good coverage. A fan setting on a sprayer works best to get a nice coating of fungicide on the plant being treated. Spray to the point just before runoff. With Patch Pro, apply every 30 days for continued preventative control of diseases.
