Keith's Pro Tips

Sometimes people worry about back siphoning the pesticide or herbicide product into the hose they’re using. The best way to avoid this is to keep spraying until the reservoir on the hose end sprayer is completely empty. This ensures no pesticide product will back siphon into the hose.

The Best Hose End Sprayers For Pesticides

A hose end sprayer is a piece of equipment that attaches to the end of any standard garden hose. It has a reservoir for holding pesticide or other lawn treatment product that mixes with water as you spray. Hose end sprayers are ideal for broadcast treatments that need to cover a large area such as a yard or large garden. They are also a simple and more economical option when compared to large spray rigs.

Recommendation

At Solutions Pest & Lawn, we recommend the Solutions Hose End Sprayer. It has a durable, polyethylene construction and fits onto any hose end. It also has a fan-spray nozzle for quick coverage of large areas which is removable for more direct applications, making it a versatile tool at a great value.

User Guide

Step 1: Fill the Reservoir

After determining how much spray you would like to create, use the markings along the side to fill the reservoir to the required level to produce the desired amount of spray. Once filled, attach it to the green top of the sprayer and make sure to screw it down tight.

Step 2: Secure the Sprayer to the Hose

Using the universal hose fitting, attach the sprayer to the end of your garden hose. Make sure the connection is secure before spraying to prevent leakage.

Step 3: Spray

Once the sprayer is filled and secured to the end of your garden hose, turn on the water pressure, point the sprayer were you would like to spray, and push the thumb switch to the ON position. The sprayer will mix the product with water as you spray. Take care to avoid overspraying one area by keeping the sprayer moving throughout the application.

It is recommended that you only load the sprayer with the amount of product required for your application so when your application is complete, the sprayer’s reservoir is empty.

To prevent back-siphoning, keep spraying water through the sprayer for a few seconds after the reservoir empties. Our recommended unit also has a built-in anti-siphoning feature that will help prevent back-siphoning.

Inspection and Maintenance

Due to the simple construction of the Solutions Hose End Sprayer very little maintenance is required. Take care to ensure that you empty the reservoir with each use, and rinse the unit out before leaving it in an open area to dry. Store the unit in a cool, dry place between uses.

Parts

The Solutions Hose End Sprayer consists of the reservoir, the fitting, the fingertip on/off control, and the nozzle.

The Reservoir

This is the clear plastic container that holds your unmixed pesticide or herbicide product. The reservoir attaches to the sprayer's green lid. Use the level markings along the side to measure the amount of unmixed product required to produce the desired amount of spray.

The Fitting

On the back of the green lid is the fitting. This is the part that attaches to your hose. To attach, simply screw the fitting into the hose end directly. It should fit any standard garden hose.

The Fingertip ON/OFF Control

On the side of the sprayer's lid is a black toggle switch. When pressed forward to the ON position, the sprayer allows water to pass freely through it while mixing in your herbicide or pesticide product from the reservoir.

The Nozzle

The “business end” of the sprayer. The Chapin comes stock with a removable fan-spray nozzle. If a more direct stream is needed for your application, just unscrew the nozzle and set it aside. The nozzle can also be rotated 180 degrees to aim the fan spray at an upaward angle. This is ideal for spraying the underside of porches, structures, and leaves.

Key Takeaways

  • A hose end sprayer is an economical option for those who need to make a broadcast application, but not so often that more specialized equipment is required.
  • Make sure not to overfill the reservoir. It should be emptied completely at the end of your application.
  • Once the reservoir is emptied, let the water continue to flow through the sprayer for a few seconds to prevent back siphoning pesticide product into your garden hose.
