Sulfentrazone
Perennial weeds like yellow nutsedge, green kyllinga, wild violet, and ground ivy are referred to as zombie weeds because they seem to come back from the dead every year despite efforts to manage them and prevent them from returning. For a long time, frustrated landowners did not have an answer until an active ingredient like Sulfentrazone became available.
Solutions Pest & Lawn has a quality selection of herbicide products in stock that contain the active ingredient Sulfentrazone. We highly recommend this product to our customers who want to control those pesky perennial weeds.
On this page, you can learn some fascinating facts about Sulfentrazone, its mode of action, and its benefits. You can also access this page to shop our recommended products, which contain sulfentrazone.
What is Sulfentrazone?
Sulfentrazone is a herbicide used for pre- and post-emergent control of broadleaf weeds, grasses, and sedges. It also works selectively, targeting only problem weeds while sparing desirable vegetation.
Sulfentrazone can eliminate annual and perennial sedges and cool-season grasses (Poa annua, Poa trivialis, tall fescue). It also controls broadleaf weeds in established, warm-season, perennial grasses, including Bermudagrass, St. Augustinegrass, Zoysiagrass, centipede, and kikuyugrass. Sulfentrazone has shown effectiveness against tall fescue and sedges from warm-season turfgrasses and Kentucky bluegrass.
How Does Sulfentrazone Work?
Mode of Action
Sulfentrazone controls weeds through its mode of action by inhibiting photosynthesis in plants. Sulfentrazone disrupts membranes and inhibits photosynthesis in plants by a process referred to as PPO inhibition. Sulfentrazone is received in the plants through the roots of the plants.
Plants die after exposure to light as they come out of the soil. It also works on foliar contact, causing rapid desiccation.
Benefits of Sulfentrazone
Sulfentrazone is versatile, and it can be used as a pre-emergent or for post-emergent control. It does an excellent job on both warm-season and cool-season grasses and can control a broad list of weeds. It is also known to have a residual of up to 60 days, so you won't have to reapply often.
Use Sulfentrazone to control weeds in established warm and cool-season turf, trees and shrubs, and other ornamentals.
Drawbacks of Sulfentrazone
Sulfentrazone is not known to be effective in controlling grassy weeds and is mainly used for broadleaf weed control and sedges. It also has a limited residual effect on spurge and bittercress weeds.
Is Sulfentrazone Safe?
Sulfentrazone is safe to use when applied according to label directions.
It is recommended that you wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) before handling or applying sulfentrazone (or any of the other chemicals we carry). Refer to the label for proper safety instructions.
What To Expect
Apply Sulfentrazone products as broadcast or spot treatments to areas where you have problem weeds. Depending on the weed, you should see visible signs of dying within 1 to 3 weeks. For more stubborn weeds, reapplication may be necessary.
