What is Sulfosulfuron?

Sulfosulfuron (chemical name:1- (4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl) -3- (2-ethylsulfonylimidazo- (1,2-a) pyridin-3-yl) sulfonylurea) is a sulfonylurea herbicide that is used for both pre-emergent and post-emergent control original to protect crops. The herbicide was first introduced in 1995 and subsequently registered commercially in the US under a variety of different brand names.

Sulfosulfuron is a selective systemic herbicide that is absorbed through filiage and roots of plants by rapid acropetallic and basipetallic translocated. In its original form, Sulfosulfuron is a white powder that does not mix well with water.

Some of the troublesome weeds sulfosulfuron included purple nutsedge, black nightshade, mustard, pigweed, and bindweed.

How Does Sulfosulfuron Work?

Sulfosulfuron’s mode of action involves interfering with the acetolactate synthase enzyme in targeted plants, which quickly slows cell division, and growth at all points.

To elaborate how this occurs, we have to look at the chemistry behind the active ingredient. Sulfosulfuron is a member of the family of sulfonylurea herbicides. This class of herbicides acts through inhibition of acetolactate synthase, thereby blocking the biosynthesis of the branched-chain amino acids valine, leucine and isoleucine. This inhibition leads to the rapid cessation of plant cell division and growth. Crop selectivity results from rapid metabolic inactivation of the herbicide in the tolerant crop. Under growth-room conditions, metabolic half-lives in tolerant crop plants range from 1–5 h, while sensitive plant species metabolize these herbicides much more slowly, with half-lives > 20 h. Pathways by which sulfonylurea herbicides are inactivated among these plants include aryl and aliphatic hydroxylation followed by glucose conjugation, sulfonylurea bridge hydrolysis and sulfonamide bond cleavage, oxidative O-demethylation and direct conjugation with (homo)glutathione.
