What is Sulfosulfuron?
Sulfosulfuron is an active ingredient in the sulfonylurea family of herbicides. It can be used as a pre- or post-emergent control for invasive weeds. It was created to protect against stubborn weeds growing around crops.
The active ingredient is both selective and systemic. It can be readily absorbed through the foliage and roots of the treated plant and travel through the entire plant system. In its original form, Sulfosulfuron is a white powder that does not mix well with water, which is why it is mixed with synergists and complementary chemicals to improve its mixing ability.
Some of the troublesome weeds Sulfosulfuron can treat include purple nutsedge, pigweed, and bindweed, among others.
How Does Sulfosulfuron Work?
Mode of Action
Sulfosulfuron’s action involves interfering with the acetolactate synthase enzyme in targeted plants. This blocks essential amino acids from developing, which quickly slows cell division and total plant growth.
Benefits of Sulfosulfuron
Sulfosulfuron has some advantages over other herbicides because it is persistent when applied in the soil. It is also selective, so you can apply it to treatment areas without fear of desired plants being affected by the active ingredient.
Sulfosulfuron is best used to treat annual and perennial grassy and broadleaf weeds on residential or commercial turf sites.
Drawbacks of Sulfosulfuron
Sulfosulfuron products work more effectively when mixed with a nonionic surfactant, which helps the product stick better to the sprayed weed. Sulfosulfuron is also a slow-killing herbicide, so you will have to be patient when using the active ingredient, as it will take several weeks before you see results.
It would be best if you did not use Sulfosulfuron on the golf course putting greens.
Is Sulfosulfuron Safe?
Sulfosulfuron is safe to use when applied according to label directions. The active ingredient presents a low environmental hazard because it is used at low dilution rates and breaks down relatively quickly in most field situations and the environment.
Please make sure to use protective equipment before applying, such as gloves, protective glasses, and long-sleeve clothing. Please refer to the product label for specific safety instructions.
What To Expect
A secondary application may need to be made 21 to 28 days after the first application. Best results occur when target weeds are actively growing and not disturbed by mowing for at least 2 days before and 2 days after application. Warm, moist conditions can speed up the active ingredients-killing process, while cold, dry conditions will delay the effect.
