Keith's Pro Tips

"When spraying Chlorsulfuron post-emergently on target weeds, the earlier you treat weed, the better. The active ingredient is more effective when weeds are very young."

Chlorsulfuron

Chlorsulfuron is an active ingredient used in herbicides which can control select broadleaf weeds and other undesirable grasses. Originally used for agricultural weed control and selective control of weeds in wheat and barley, Chlorsulfuron eventually became sold for commercial use to control broadleaf and grassy weeds on residential and commercial lawns and turf.

Solutions Pest & Lawn is proud to have in stock quality herbicides that contain Chlorsulfuron. On this page you can learn some interesting facts about Chlorsulfuron, it’s mode of action and benefits. You can also access this page to shop our entire line of products that are chlorsulfuron-based.

What is Chlorsulfuron?

Chlorsulfuron (Chemical name: 2-chloro-N-[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl) aminocarbonyl]-benzenesulfonamide (58)) was the first commercial herbicide from the sulfonylurea group of chemicals. It is 100 times more active than traditional herbicides so very low rates are used in the field.

It is a selective and systemic herbicide that can be absorbed through the leaves and roots of the targeted weed. Its main uses are for the control of a large variety of grass and broadleaf weeds as a pre-emergent application on wheat or as a post-emergent application on wheat, barley and oat crops.

Some of the key weeds Chlorsulfuron is known to successfully control include Canada thistle, sunflower, henbit, plantain, smartweed, curly dock, Russian thistle, chickweed, cocklebur and many others. It works against broadleaf weeds and some annual grass weeds. Certain perennials are also sensitive to the effects of Chlorsulfuron.

How Does Chlorsulfuron Work?

Mode of Action

The mode of action of Chlorsulfuron is that it stops cell division in plant roots and shoots, which in turn causes plants to not be able to grow any further.

Benefits of Chlorsulfuron

Chlorsulfuron is known to be a slow killing herbicide yet is still very effective. It is also selective so you can apply it to treatment areas without fear of desired plants being affected by the active ingredient.

Chlorsulfuron is best used as a pre-emergent to target problem weeds on sites before they have germinated or post-emergent control when plants are in their early growth stages.

Drawbacks of Chlorsulfuron

Carfentrazone can take several weeks to completely kill target weeds because of it's slow-killing traits. Do not use Chlorsulfuron on weeds that have germinated and are in mature stages of growth as it will not be very effective in killing the plants.

Is Chlorsulfuron Safe?

Chlorsulfuron is safe to use when applied according to label directions. The active ingredient presents a low hazard to the environment because it is used at low dilution rates and breaks down relatively quickly in most field situations and in the environment.

Please make sure to use protective equipment before applying. Gloves, protective glasses and long sleeve clothing should be a bare minimum level of protection. Please refer to the product label for specific safety instructions.

What To Expect

Selective 2,4-D spraying

An application of Chlorsulfuron begins to harm the plant as soon as the target weeds are contacted by the chemical but it can take several weeks before the weed completely dies. Repeat applications may be necessary if a weed is very persistent or well established.
