While glyphosate still is one of the leading active ingredients in herbicides designed for agricultural use, however more and more weed species began to become resistant to glyphosate without a herbicide coming out to answer to the resistance, that is, until glufosinate came to be. Glufosinate is a non-selective chemical herbicide that can be used only on crops tolerant to it – notoriously, those genetically engineered for such resistance.

What Is Glufosinate?

Glufosinate(chemical name: (RS)-2-Amino-4-(hydroxy(methyl)phosphonoyl)butanoic acid) is a naturally occurring broad-spectrum systemic herbicide produced by several species of Streptomyces soil bacteria. Glufosinate is also know by other names such as phosphinothricin. Glufosinate is the shortened name for the ammonium salt, glufosinate ammonium.

Glufosinate is used to control a wide range of weeds after the crop emerges or for total vegetation control on land not used for agriculture. Glufosinate herbicides are also used to desiccate (dry out) crops before harvest.

Glufosinate was first introduced into Japan as an herbicide in 1984 and was given provisional approval in the UK in 1991.  It was first registered in the U.S. for use as an herbicide in 1993 by Hoechst Celanese (3) and is now registered for use in more than forty countries and is marketed under a number of different trade names.

How Does Glufosinate Work?

Glufosinate is a phosphorus-containing amino acid.It works via inhibiting the activity of a plant enzyme, glutamine synthetase, which is necessary for the production of the amino acid glutamine and for ammonia detoxification. The application of glufosinate leads to reduced glutamine and increased ammonia levels in the plant's tissues. This causes photosynthesis to stop and the plant dies within a few days after withering and membrane disruption .

Uptake of glufosinate is through the leaves and stem, and damage is restricted to those parts of the plants which are in direct contact with the spray. The active ingredient can move within leaves but cannot move to other parts of the plant such as underground rhizomes or stolons. Long-term control of perennial weeds is therefore limited. The anionic surfactant, sodium polyoxyethylene alkylether sulphate (AES), is added to enhance the plant’s absorption of glufosinate.

Is Glufosinate Safe To Use?

Glufosinate also inhibits the same enzyme in animals. Although most herbicides are not neurotoxins, because of its chemical similarity to glutamate, which is a natural amino acid that can stimulate the nervous system, glufosinate can produce neurotoxic effects.  Signs of neurotoxicity have been seen by most species of laboratory animals and at lethal doses, the overt signs of toxicity include: convulsions, salivation, hypersensitivity, irregular breathing, and trembling.  Glufosinate has also been shown to elicit neurotoxic effects at sub-lethal doses and can also adversely affect brain development in neonatal animals.


The EPA classifies glufosinate ammonium as "persistent" and "mobile".  This high "mobility" is another way of saying that glufosinate has a high water solubility (1370 g/litre water) and that in loam or sandy loam soils, up to 80% of the glufosinate is subject to leaching.  This means that "the potential for groundwater contamination" does exist.


It is recommended that when handling glufosinate (or any of the other chemicals we carry) to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) before handling or applying. Gloves, goggles, long sleeved clothing should be the minimum standard. Please refer to the label for proper safety instructions.
