Keith's Pro Tips

"Timing is crucial when applying Glufosinate. It works best when weeds are actively growing. The active loses some effectiveness when applications are made to weeds under stress due to drought or cool temperatures."

Glufosinate

While Glyphosate is still one of the leading active ingredients in herbicides designed for agricultural use, more weed species are becoming resistant to It. Glufosinate is a non-selective chemical herbicide developed to combat plants that become tolerant of Glyphosate and show resistance.

Solutions Pest & Lawn has several herbicide products in stock that contain Glufosinate, and we highly recommend this product to our customers who have trouble with weeds that won't take to other herbicide actives. This page provides some background information about Glufosinate, its mode of action, and its benefits. You can also access this page to shop our entire line of products that contain Glufosinate.

What is Glufosinate?

Glufosinate is a popular herbicide active ingredient used to control weeds on agricultural crops. It also goes by other names, such as phosphinothricin, and is the shortened name for the ammonium salt glufosinate-ammonium.

Glufosinate is used to control a wide range of weeds after the crop emerges or for total vegetation control on land that is not used for agriculture. Glufosinate herbicides are also used to desiccate or dry out crops before harvest.

How Does Glufosinate Work?

Glufosinate is an amino acid that inhibits the activity of a plant enzyme known as glutamine synthetase. This enzyme is crucial to the metabolism of the affected plant. Glufosinate applications result in reduced glutamine and increased ammonia levels in the plant's tissues. This causes photosynthesis to stop, and the plant dies within a few days.

The chemical builds up in the plant's growing points, leading to rapid overgrowth and eventual plant death. Death can usually arrive in as little as a few days to a couple of weeks.

Benefits of Glufosinate

Glufosinate is very effective in controlling a wide range of weeds non-selectively, especially those weeds that have become resistant to the effects of Glyphosate.

Drawbacks of Glufosinate

Glufosinate is not systemic. When applied to plant leaves and stems, the damage is restricted to those parts of the plants in direct contact with the spray.

The active ingredient can move within leaves but cannot move to other parts of the plant, such as underground rhizomes or stolons. As a result, long-term control of perennial weeds is limited.

Is Glufosinate Safe?

Glufosinate is safe to use when applied according to label directions. Always read the product label for safety instructions in handling Glufosinate.

We recommend exercising caution when handling Glufosinate products (or any other chemical we have in stock) and wearing protective safety equipment such as a protective mask, gloves, goggles, and long-sleeved clothing to ensure you will be safe. Please use the product according to the label directions for proper safety measures.

What To Expect

Spraying crops with Fluroxypyr

Under good growing conditions, visual effects and control from applying Glufosinate products occur within 2 to 4 days after application.

As mentioned earlier, Glufosinate is nonselective and will injure or kill all green vegetation contacted by the spray. Avoid all contact with foliage or green tissue of desirable vegetation. Avoid direct spray contact with green, thin, or uncalloused bark of desirable vegetation or plant injury may result. If desirable vegetation is contacted, rinse the sprayed portion with water immediately.
