Keith's Pro Tips

"Since Oxyfluorfen is a contact herbicide, when using it as a post-emergent make sure to spray the target weed evenly all over. Using a fan spray nozzle setting would be best for that."

Oxyfluorfen

Annual and grassy broadleaf weeds can be annoying on residential and commercial sites, but when they are growing on agricultural settings, they can cause a lot of disruption and hurt the bottom line of land managers. This is why herbicide active ingredients like Oxyfluorfen are so popular as they help to eliminate weeds when they are growing and even before they grow.

On this page we will share with you some brief info about Oxyfluorfen, it’s mode of action and why it is so effective.

What is Oxyfluorfen?

Oxyfluorfen is a herbicide active ingredient used for broad-spectrum pre- and post-emergent control of annual broadleaf and grassy weeds. Oxyfluorfen has been used to treat for weeds on tree fruit, nut, vine and field crops. While Oxyfluorfen has found a lot of use in agricultural settings, it can also be used to control weeds in residential areas, particularly for weeds that creep up on patios, porches, sidewalks and other areas.

How Does Oxyfluorfen Work?

Mode of Action

Oxyfluorfen controls weeds by inhibiting an essential enzyme known as protoporphyrinogen oxidase or "protox" for short. This leads to the death of the plants tissues.

Benefits of Oxyfluorfen

Oxyfluorfen is versatile in that it can be used as a pre-emergent or as a post-emergent form of weed control. Pre-emergently, it's known to control annual grasses like barnyardgrass, crabgrass and various broadleaf plants. As a post-emergent, it has shown to control annual grasses and broadleaf weeds like pigweed, smartweed, wild mustard and more.

Drawbacks of Oxyfluorfen

Oxyfluorfen is only a contact herbicide when used as a post-emergent and will only effect target plants with the add of light. If there is no light to activate the product, it will have little effect in harming the target plant to disrupt cell membranes.

Is Oxyfluorfen Safe?

Oxyfluorfen is safe to use when applied according to label directions. It is recommended that when handling Oxyfluorfen (or any of the other chemicals we carry) to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) before handling or applying. Gloves, goggles, long-sleeved clothing should be the minimum standard. Please refer to the label for proper safety instructions.

What To Expect

Sprayer Metsulfuron

Oxyfluorfen-based products are much more reliable as a pre-emergent. When applied at the right time prior to target weed seed germination, it should sufficiently prevent weed growth. Post-emergently, Oxyfluorfen is good to use as a contact herbicide but it will only harm the areas of the plant that have been sprayed. The active will also need sunlight to activate the product so it can burn the target plants.
