Oxyfluorfen
Annual and grassy broadleaf weeds can be annoying on residential and commercial sites, but when they grow in agricultural settings, they can cause a lot of disruption and hurt the bottom line of land managers. This is why herbicide-active ingredients like Oxyfluorfen are so popular, as they help to eliminate weeds when they are growing and even before they grow.
On this page, we will share some brief information about Oxyfluorfen, its mode of action, and why it is so effective.
What is Oxyfluorfen?
Oxyfluorfen is an active herbicide for broad-spectrum pre- and post-emergent control of annual broadleaf and grassy weeds. Oxyfluorfen has been used to treat weeds on tree fruit, nut, vine, and field crops. While Oxyfluorfen is very useful in agricultural settings, it can also control weeds in residential areas, particularly for weeds that creep up on patios, porches, sidewalks, and other areas.
How Does Oxyfluorfen Work?
Mode of Action
Oxyfluorfen controls weeds by inhibiting an essential enzyme known as protoporphyrinogen oxidase, or "protox" for short. This leads to the death of the plant's tissues.
Benefits of Oxyfluorfen
Oxyfluorfen is versatile in that it can be used as a pre-emergent or as a post-emergent form of weed control. Pre-emergently, it's known to control annual grasses like barnyardgrass, crabgrass, and various broadleaf plants. It has been shown to control annual grasses and broadleaf weeds like pigweed, smartweed, wild mustard, and more as a post-emergent.
Drawbacks of Oxyfluorfen
Oxyfluorfen is only a contact herbicide when used as a post-emergent and will only affect target plants with light. If no light activates the product, it will have little effect on harming the target plant and disrupting cell membranes.
Is Oxyfluorfen Safe?
Oxyfluorfen is safe to use when applied according to label directions. When handling Oxyfluorfen (or any other chemicals we carry), proper personal protective equipment (PPE) should be worn before handling or applying. Gloves, goggles, and long-sleeved clothing should be the minimum standard. Please refer to the label for proper safety instructions.
What To Expect
Oxyfluorfen-based products are much more reliable than pre-emergents. When applied at the right time prior to target weed seed germination, they should sufficiently prevent weed growth. Post-emergently, Oxyfluorfen is good to use as a contact herbicide, but it will only harm the areas of the plant that have been sprayed. The active will also need sunlight to activate the product to burn the target plants.
