Keith's Pro Tips

"Simazine is a pre-emergent herbicide that will only control weeds that have not sprouted and will not kill mature or established weeds. It may be helpful to pair a pre-emergent herbicide with an approved post-emergent herbicide to control both established weeds and prevent them from growing back."

Simazine

One of the more effective herbicide-active ingredients on the market is Simazine. This product is known for successfully controlling woody plants and annual and perennial grasses. Simazine is great for people who want to reduce the number of hand-pulling weeds in their gardens and landscapes.

What is Simazine?

Applying Simazine to Crops

Simazine is a pre-emergent herbicide that selectively controls various annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds. It has found much success in croplands in keeping target weeds off fruits and vegetables in orchards, vineyards, and other areas where crops are grown.

Simazine has also been used to control weeds on turfgrass and as a non-selective form of weed control when used at higher rates on industrial sites. It has also been used to control aquatic weeds like algae and submerged weeds.

How Does Simazine Work?

Mode of Action

Simazine controls weeds through its mode of action by inhibiting photosynthesis in plants. While used primarily as a pre-emergent to prevent weeds from growing, seedlings that do emerge turn yellow and die shortly thereafter.

Benefits of Simazine

Simazine is a flexible herbicide that can control weeds on agricultural sites, turfgrass, non-selective weed control on industrial sites and aquatic weed control. Simazine also has an impressive residual effect of 3 to 6 months.

Drawbacks of Simazine

Simazine is unable to control nutsedges. Since it is a pre-emergent, it cannot control established weeds that have already germinated.

Is Simazine Safe?

Simazine is safe to use when applied according to label directions. When handling Simazine (or any of the other chemicals we carry), it is recommended that you wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) before handling or applying it (Gloves, protective eyewear, long-sleeved clothing). Refer to the label for proper safety instructions.

What To Expect

Spraying weeds with Simazine

It is recommended that Simazine be applied alongside a pre-emergent herbicide that targets grassy weeds. Apply Simazine in the late winter to control weed seeds that intend to germinate the following spring, and then reapply in the late summer to control weed seeds that will germinate in the fall. After the application, water the area to activate the product.
