What is Lambda-Cyhalothrin?

Spraying Lambda-Cyhalothrin indoors

Lambda-Cyhalothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid, a man-made version of natural-occurring pyrethrum which is derived from petals of the chrysanthemum flower. Lambda-Cyhalothrin has the ability to kill target insects either through coming into physical contact with the chemical or via consumption. Lambda-Cyhalothrin is a preferred active ingredient for many pest control product manufacturers due to its long-lasting residual effect compared to other chemical ingredients.

The physical properties of lambda-cyhalothrin are that it is a colorless chemical but can also appear beige in solid form and has a mild odor. It has a low water solubility and is nonvolatile. Lambda-Cyhalothrin comes in a number of different forms of pest control products--from liquid insecticide concentrates to dusts and granules and even granular formulations.

How Does Lambda-Cyhalothrin Work?

Lambda-Cyhalothrin products work exceptionally fast to treat a wide number of household pests. It’s a dual-action insecticide, which means that the synthetic pyrethroid gets to work right away either by touch or via ingestion.

Lambda-Cyhalothrin, much like other pyrethroids, kills targeted insects via disrupting and compromising the insect’s central nervous system. This leads to the excitement of the insect nerve cells which results in paralysis. With the insect paralyzed and unable to conduct its regular bodily functions, the insect dies of starvation. The poison is spreadable and is known to transfer throughout a target insects population, killing off the entire colony.

Benefits of Lambda-Cyhalothrin

Lambda-Cyhalothrin is a versatile pesticide active ingredient and comes in many different formulations. It is used in liquid insecticide concentrates, gel baits, rodenticides, among others.

Lambda-Cyhalothrin is best used either as a barrier treatment around a structure or as a broadcast treatment against insects that are on landscapes, shrubs and ornamentals because it is able to breakdown quickly, rendering no harm to the plant.

Drawbacks of Lambda-Cyhalothrin

Lambda-Cyhalothrin does come with a mild odor that can be off-putting to some who are sensitive. You may not want to use Lambda-Cyhalothrin products if you desire a quicker knockdown of an infestation since it is not an instant kill product.

Is Lambda-Cyhalothrin Safe?

Lambda-cyhalothrin is safe to use and apply when applied according to label directions. Whenever handling this chemical, or any pest control chemical we carry here at Solutions, please practice proper safety procedures by gearing up in protective safety equipment such as goggles, gloves and a breathing mask.

Whenever you use any of our products here at Solutions Pest & Lawn, we always recommend keeping children and pets away from the area being treated until the application product has completely dried which usually takes a half-hour to an hour. Once dried, children and pets can be brought back into the treated area.

What To Expect

Lambda-Cyhalothrin products have a dual mode of action so it can affect insects upon contact or ingestion. After application, once the insect has been exposed to the active ingredient, their feeding activity stops within minutes to hours and they often die within 1 to 2 days but it can take up to 7 days depending on the formulation and the target pest.

Lambda-Cyhalothrin products also have a long-time residual so you won't have to apply the product as often unless you have a very sizable infestation.
