Fluazifop

While it may sound funny to pronounce, fluazifop is a helpful active ingredient which is a part of a number of useful selective herbicides for the treatment of grassy weeds. It is used widely on agricultural farms as well as on non-crop lands and delivers exceptional control.

Solutions Pest & Lawn carries a herbicide products in stock which contain diuron and we highly recommend this product to our customers. On this page you can learn some historic facts about fluazifop, how it works and its benefits. You can also access this page to shop our entire line of products which contain fluazifop

What is Fluazifop?

Fluazifop is the shortened name for Fluazifop-p-butyl(chemical name: R-2-[4- [[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2- pyridinyl]oxy]phenoxy] propanate) a chemical compound from the from the group of aryloxyphenoxypropionates that is primarily a selective phenoxy herbicide which is a post-emergent and is used to control a number of annual and perennial grass weeds. It is used on soybeans and other broad-leaved crops such as carrots, spinach, potatoes, and ornamentals. In its original form, fluazifop is a pale yellow liquid.

Fluazifop was originally created in the 1980s by the Japanese company Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha (ISK) for the control of annual and perennial weeds found around cotton, soya, stone, asparagus, coffee and other crops. It is often paired with an oil adjuvant or nonionic surfactant to increase it’s effectiveness. It is compatible with a variety of other herbicides and can also be used in formulations with other products such as fenoxapropylester and Fomesafen . It is as an emulsifiable concentrate, the technical product of which also partly contains the S-isomer.

Fluazifop is lethal to grasses but non-toxic to broadleaf weeds and thus is used to control unwanted grasses around crops such as such as soybean, oilseed rape, sugar beet, fodder beet, potatoes, vegetables, cotton, pome fruit, stone fruit, bush fruit, citrus fruit, vines, pineapples, bananas, strawberries, sunflowers, alfalfa, ornamentals, and other broadleaf crops

How does Fluazifop work?

Fluazifop-P-butyl’s mode of action is that it is a lipid synthesis inhibitor. Lipids are essential components of cell membranes and thus by inhibiting these lipids, death results particularly at the sites of active growth. Fluazifop is quickly absorbed into the leaf surface, hydrolysed to fluazifop-P and translocated through the phloem and xylem, accumulating in the rhizomes and stolons of perennial grasses and the meristems of annual and perennial grasses.

Weeds treated with fluazifop-p-butyl stop growing within a few hours, show gradual discoloration on newer growth in 3 to 4 days, and eventually necrosis, desiccation, and plant death occurs within 2 to 3 weeks.

Fluazifop-p-butyl inhibits acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase), which is an essential plant enzyme that acts in fatty acid synthesis, and selectivity due to the difference of the enzyme sensitivity between gramineae and non-gramineae plants.
