Keith's Pro Tips

"Thorough coverage of all weed plant foliage is important for good activity when using Fluazifop. Best results occur when young actively growing weeds are treated that are not under stress from moisture, temperature, low soil fertility, mechanical, or chemical injury."

Fluazifop

While it may sound funny to pronounce, Fluazifop is a helpful herbicide active ingredient used in various selective herbicides to treat grassy weeds. It is used widely on agricultural farms as well as on non-crop lands and delivers exceptional control.

On this page, you can learn some more about Fluazifop, how it works and its benefits. You can also access this page to shop our recommendations of products that contain Fluazifop.

What is Fluazifop?

Spraying Fluazifop on crops

Fluazifop is the shortened name for Fluazifop-p-butyl, a chemical compound that serves primarily as a selective post-emergent herbicide. Fluazifop is used to control a number of annual and perennial grass weeds. It has been used in agricultural settings on soybeans and other broad-leaved crops such as carrots, spinach, potatoes, and ornamentals. Fluazifop is lethal to grasses but non-toxic to broadleaf weeds.

How Does Fluazifop Work?

Mode of Action

Fluazifop's mode of action is that it is a lipid synthesis inhibitor. Lipids are important components of cell membranes. By inhibiting these lipids, the plant experiences death at the sites of active growth. Fluazifop is quickly absorbed into the leaf surface, and moves through the entire plant, accumulating in the rhizomes and stolons of perennial grasses and the meristems of annual and perennial grasses.

Fluazifop also detrimentally affects an essential plant enzyme called CoA carboxylase (ACCase). Fluazifop essentially disrupts internal processes of plants that come into contact with it, causing a breakdown of the plant entirely.

Benefits of Fluazifop

Fluazifop is very effective in eliminating perennial and annual grassy weeds and does so quickly, with visible results appearing in a matter of a few days. It is also a systemic herbicide and will move from the foliage down to the roots, shoots, rhizomes and stolons of treated weeds. It is also rainfast in one hour.

Drawbacks of Fluazifop

Fluazifop is a grassy weed killer so it is ineffective against broadleaf weeds or sedges. Fluazifop is also ineffective under drought conditions and works best when plants are growing.

Is Fluazifop Safe?

Fluazifop is safe to use when applied according to label directions. Always read the product label for safety instructions in handling Fluazifop.

We recommend exercising caution when handling Fluazifop products (or any other chemical we have in stock). Wear protective safety equipment such as a protective mask, gloves, goggles, as well as long sleeve clothing to ensure you will be safe. Please use the product according to the label's directions for proper safety measures.
