What is Pyrethrum?

Pyrethrins, registered for use as insecticides since the 1950’s, are natural compounds that have been processed to use as insecticides. They come specifically from chrysanthemums, and they consist of six different chemicals: pyrethrin I, pyrethrin II, cinerin I, cinerin II, jasmolin I, and jasmolin II.

The terms ‘pyrethrum’ and ‘pyrethrins’ are often interchangeable and refer to the same thing. Some establishments however refer to the physical crushed flowers as ‘pyrethrum’ and the actual chemical components as the pyrethrins.

How Does Pyrethrum Work?

Pyrethrins work on contact with targeted pests. These ingredients interfere with pests’ central nervous system, causing muscle spasms and inflicting paralysis. This creates an inability to function or eat, eventually leading to the pests’s death.

Benefits of Pyrethrum

Pyrethrum is a natural form of pest control and is an excellent choice for someone wanting to control problem pests but does not want to use harmful or potentially unsafe chemicals.

Pyrethrum is best used when you desire a more natural method of pest control that is safe to apply indoors or outdoors to treat insects.

Drawbacks of Pyrethrum

While Pyrethrum is an effective and natural pest control chemical, they are not potent for long periods of time because they typically contain impurities from the flower. Pyrethrum have since been modeled for its killing power by the creation of a synthetic version of the chemical called pyrethroids which produce a longer-lasting residual effect when applied to kill insects.

Avoid using Pyrethrum based products if you desire a more long-term control product so you won't have to do repeated applications often since it doesn't have a long residual effect.

Is Pyrethrum Safe?

Pyrethrins are some of the safest pesticide chemicals available to consumers. When applied according to label directions, pyrethrins are safe to use in and around the home. Pyrethrin compounds break down quickly in the environment, so pets and children are safe after the applied product dries.

That being said, always wear the proper personal protective equipment, or PPE, when applying pyrethrin insecticides and keep them out of reach of any children or pets.

What To Expect

Pyrethrum-based products affect insects upon contact, attacking the central nervous system and resulting in a quick knockdown and kill. In small, does, Pyrethrum serves as a repellent to protect food establishments, grain storage and crops from insect pests.

Pyrethrum can be applied in insect hiding spots as a flushing agent, getting them out of hiding so they can be further exposed to the insecticide.
