Some of the toughest weeds around can be tamed by the active ingredient known as fluroxypyr. Fluroxypyr is a selective post-emergent herbicide which is best applied when weeds are actively growing (but before bud stage of weed growth). Fluroxypyr is commonly used in agricultural settings for the control of broad-leaved weeds in small grain cereals, maize, pastures, range land and turf.

Solutions Pest & Lawn has a number of herbicide products in stock which contain fluroxypyr and we highly recommend this product to our customers who have trouble with weeds such as kochia, lespedeza and dogfennel. On this page you can learn some background information about fluroxypyr, it’s mode of action and benefits. You can also access this page to shop our entire line of products which contain fluroxypyr.

What Is Fluroxypyr?

Fluroxypyr (chemical name: 1-methylheptyl (4-amino-3,5-dichloro-6-fluro-2-pyridyloxyl)acetate) is a systemic and selective herbicide made from pyridinoxy acid and is used to control annual and perennial broadleaf weeds and woody brush. Fluroxypyr induces auxin-type responses in susceptible annual and perennial broadleaf weeds (auxin being a type of plant growth hormone). Fluroxypyr is a member of the pyridine class of herbicides.

The active ingredient was first registered and manufactured by Dow AgroSciences LLC in 1998 under the Vista brand name so it is still a relatively new active ingredient.

Some of the weeds that fluroxypyr has been reported to successfully control include: Bedstraw (cleavers), chickweed, cocklebur, coffeeweed, common ragweed, common purslane, grape species, hemp dogbane, kochia, morninglory, sunflower, velvetleaf and Venice mallow

How Does Fluroxypyr Work?

The mode of action of fluroxypyr is that it operates like a plant growth regulator by imitating natural plant hormones called auxins. Auxins, which are found in all members of the plant kingdom, are responsible for regulating the amount, type and direction of plant growth, and are mostly found at the tips of plant roots and shoots. Fluroxypyr enters plants that have been treated through the leaves and roots, and replaces natural auxins at binding sites, causing abnormal growth patterns and disrupting the growth processes of the plant.

The chemical builds up in the growing points of the plant, leading to rapid overgrowth, and eventual plant death. Death can usually arrive from as little as a few days to a couple of weeks.

Why Buy These Products

Featured Products Which Contain Fluroxypyr

Fluroxypyr Herbicide - Fluroxypyr Herbicide (generic Vista XRT) is formulated as a selective herbicide for the control of annual and perennial broadleaf weeds within non-cropland areas. Floroxypyr can be used as a broadcast application or just as a spot treatment to achieve the results desired.

Is Fluroxypyr Safe To Use?

Fluroxypyr is toxic to fish. Do not apply directly to water, or to areas where surface water is present or to intertidal areas below the mean high water mark. Do not apply when weather conditions favor drift or runoff from treated areas as this product may be hazardous to aquatic organisms and non-target plants. Do not contaminate water when disposing of equipment wash waters. Do not allow sprays to drift onto adjacent desirable plants.

Fluroxypyr has low toxicity if individuals accidentally eat residues or get them on their skin, and very low toxicity if it is inhaled. Rabbits exposed on the skin have slight irritation which is usually resolvable by 48 hours. Fluroxypyr applied to the eyes of rabbits resulted in severe irritation which resolved in three weeks. Fluroxypyr does not result in sensitization in guinea pigs.

It is recommended that when using this chemical (or any of the other chemicals we carry) to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) before handling or applying. Gloves, goggles, long sleeved clothing should be the minimum standard. Please refer to the label for proper safety
