Fluroxypyr

Some of the toughest weeds can be tamed by the active ingredient Fluroxypyr. Fluroxypyr is a selective post-emergent herbicide that is best applied when weeds are actively growing (but before the bud stage of weed growth). It is commonly used in agricultural settings to control broad-leaved weeds in small grain cereals, maize, pastures, rangeland, and turf.

Solutions Pest & Lawn has several herbicide products in stock that contain Fluroxypyr. We highly recommend this product to our customers who have trouble with weeds such as kochia, lespedeza, and dogfennel. On this page, you can learn some background information about Fluroxypyr, its mode of action, and its benefits. You can also access this page to shop our entire line of products that contain Fluroxypyr.

What is Fluroxypyr?

Fluroxypyr Spraying of brush

Fluroxypyr is a systemic and selective herbicide made from pyridinoxy acid and is used to control annual and perennial broadleaf weeds and woody brush. Fluroxypyr is a member of the pyridine class of herbicides and induces an auxin-type response in susceptible annual and perennial broadleaf weeds (auxin is a plant growth hormone).

Some of the weeds that Fluroxypyr has been reported to successfully control include Bedstraw (cleavers), chickweed, cocklebur, coffee weed, common ragweed, common purslane, grape species, hemp dogbane, kochia, morning glory, sunflower, velvetleaf, and Venice mallow.

How Does Fluroxypyr Work?

The mode of action of Fluroxypyr is that it operates like a plant growth regulator by imitating natural plant hormones called auxins. Auxins, found in all plant types, regulate the amount, type, and direction of plant growth and are mostly found at the tips of plant roots and shoots. Fluroxypyr enters plants that have been treated through the leaves and roots and replaces natural auxins at binding sites, causing abnormal growth patterns and disrupting the growth processes of the plant.

The chemical builds up in the plant's growth points, leading to rapid overgrowth and eventual plant death. Death can usually occur in as little as a few days to a couple of weeks.

Benefits of Fluroxypyr

Fluroxypyr is very effective in controlling a wide range of broadleaf weeds and woody brush, making it excellent for controlling weed problems on croplands and pastures, rights of way, and industrial sites. It is also a selective herbicide, meaning it will only harm target weeds and have little to no effect on non-target desired vegetation.

Drawbacks of Fluroxypyr

Fluroxypyr may injure or kill legumes. Do not apply if the injury to legumes cannot be tolerated. Legumes may be less sensitive to herbicide injury after mature plant growth and seed have been set.

Is Fluroxypyr Safe?

Fluroxypyr is safe to use when applied according to label directions. Always read the product label for safety instructions when handling Fluroxypyr.

We recommend exercising caution when handling Fluroxypyr products (or any other chemical we have in stock) and wearing protective safety equipment such as a protective mask, gloves, goggles, and long-sleeved clothing to ensure you will be safe. Please use the product according to the label directions for proper safety measures.

What To Expect

Spraying crops with Fluroxypyr

Fluroxypyr begins to eliminate target weeds shortly after treatment but may take several weeks to completely kill unwanted vegetation.

Apply as a broadcast treatment when weeds are actively growing but before the bud stage of weed growth.
