Keith's Pro Tips

"A good handheld pump sprayer is honestly something just about everyone should have. It’s indispensable if you’re going to be doing any surface chemical treatments yourself. Just be sure to flush it out after each use and clean it thoroughly when switching between different pesticide products."

The Best Handheld Pesticide Sprayers

A handheld pump sprayer is a vital tool in both professional and DIY pest control. It allows for the precise surface applications of pesticides and herbicides in small to medium-sized areas, such as around the perimeter of an average-sized house.

While many products may come in some sort of ready-to-use option, such as a spray bottle, you’re not going to be able to get the kind of precise control or coverage that you can get with a professional handheld sprayer. They allow you to reach deep into cracks and crevices that spray bottles or other application methods don’t have the pressure to penetrate, and also provide a more consistent flow of product.

Recommendation

For the general customer, we recommend our own Solutions 1 Gallon Pump Sprayer. We stand by our product and it comes with a lifetime warranty. Its durable poly construction and adjustable tip makes it versatile and eliminates any worry of rust or corrosion from long-term storage.

User Guide

Step 1: Fill the Reservoir

First, fill the reservoir half full of water (about a half a gallon). Then refer to your pesticide products manual for the proper mix rate in 1 gallon of water for your application. Measure out the amount instructed and add it to the water, then replace the cap and screw it down tight. Agitate the mixture until it’s a uniform solution. Unscrew the cap and finish filling the remaining space with water. Screw the cap back on tight and agitate once more.

Step 2: Charge the Pump

Once your Solutions 1 gallon pump sprayer is loaded with mixed product, raise and depress the pump handle until you feel the pressure build. Once it has a noticeably tight pressure, push the handle all the way down and give it a quarter turn to the right to lock it in place. It doubles as a carrying handle during application.

Step 3: Spray

To spray, simply depress the spray button found on the wand. Be sure to set your spray tip to the desired setting. The Solutions 1 gallon pump sprayer can produce a cone jet as well as a pin stream spray. It is recommended that you only mix what you need for your specific application so when you are done spraying, the reservoir is completely empty and ready to be flushed out to be stored.

Parts

Handheld Pump Sprayers consist of the pump, the reservoir, the hose, the wand, and the spray tip.

The Pump

Once the reservoir is filled and the lid is secured, the pump provides the air pressure needed to actually spray the pesticide product. Simply raise and depress the pump a number of times until a tight pressure is felt. In the case of our recommended model, once it's tight, push the pump all the way in and turn the handle ninety degrees to the right to secure it in place and it doubles as a carrying handle. Our recommended unit comes with a standard hand pump, although some other models may have a compressor that requires no manual pumping.

The Reservoir

The reservoir holds the mixed pesticide product until you’re ready to spray. Most handheld units have a 1 to 2 gallon reservoir which is enough to treat the perimeter of an average-sized house.

The Hose

The hose connects the reservoir to the wand. Product travels through it on its way to the sprayer tip.

The Wand

The wand is the part that the operator holds and uses to aim the chemical spray. Our recommended unit has a low weight push control wand that allows for easy spraying even for long periods of time.

The Spray Tip

The spray tip focuses the spray as it leaves the wand. Most handheld spray units have adjustable or replaceable spray tips. This allows for multiple spray configurations such as a cone shape, fan shape, pin stream, etc. The spray tip on our recommended model is adjustable with a simple turn clockwise or counterclockwise between a cone jet, for wider surface areas, and a pin stream, for narrow cracks and crevices.

Key Takeaways

  • A good handheld pump sprayer is indispensable for anyone looking to do DIY pest control. It can be used to apply both herbicides and pesticides in a precise, controlled manner over a larger surface area than other options such as spray bottles allow.
  • To ensure your sprayer remains in top condition between uses, be sure to flush the system completely after each use before storing.
