Prodiamine
When the temperatures drop in the Winter, homeowners may feel that they will soon see the end of troublesome weeds such as crabgrass. However, the seeds of these weeds stay alive in lawns while in hiding, using all your soil's nutrients to hibernate and rise up in the Spring to ugly up your yard. When these weeds emerge, they can be extremely difficult to control.
It would be wise to stop weeds like crabgrass before they emerge onto your turf with a pre-emergent active ingredient like Prodiamine. Solutions Pest & Lawn has some great herbicide products that contain the active ingredient Prodiamine, and we regularly recommend them to our customers who want to prevent dealing with Crabgrass and other stubborn weeds.
On this page, we will share background info about Prodiamine, its mode of action, and its benefits. You can also access this page to shop our Prodiamine-based products.
What is Prodiamine?
Prodiamine is an active ingredient in pre-emergent herbicides. It works to control grasses and broadleaf weeds before they sprout from the soil by preventing the weed seeds from germinating. By using it once or twice a year, pre-emergents help control pesky weeds that may be a recurring problem on a landscape.
Prodiamine is registered commercially to control weeds in nurseries, landscaping, turf farms, Christmas tree farms, golf courses, and more. It can also be safely used on certain types of desirable grasses without harming them, such as Bermudagrass, Fescue, St. Augustine, and common turf grasses.
How Does Prodiamine Work?
Mode of Action
Prodiamine prevents root growth by blocking plant cell division steps needed for chromosome separation and cell wall formation. As a pre-emergent herbicide, it essentially acts as a sort of birth control for the target weed, preventing the weed seed from growing.
Benefits of Prodiamine
Prodiamine is an active ingredient in solid products for pre-emergent weed control. Most prodiamine products have a broad label that lists different weeds that can be controlled successfully.
Drawbacks of Prodiamine
While we don’t want to discount the effectiveness of Prodiamine and how it has successfully controlled plenty of different weeds, it is important to note that with Prodiamine or any pre-emergent herbicide, the results may not be 100 percent. Depending on the resilience and stubbornness of some hard-to-control weeds, there may still be some weeds that pop up during the growing season, meaning that some post-emergent treatment may still have to be conducted.
What To Expect
Prodiamine usually comes in a WDG or powder form and is to be mixed with water in a pump sprayer. It could also come in granular form and must be applied using a granular spreader.
Spray Application
First, you should measure your yard's square footage to determine how much Prodiamine-based product you need. Following the product's label instructions, mix the appropriate amount of Prodiamine into your selected sprayer with water and then broadcast the product over your yard at the proper time (before your target weed has germinated). After spraying the product, you will need to water your grass.
Granular Application
Measure your yard's square footage to determine your needed granules. To find the square footage, measure the treatment area's length and width in feet, then multiply them together (length X width = square footage).
Load your Prodiamine active ingredient product to your properly calibrated spreader based on the label directions for rates. Broadcast the granules over your yard before weed germination, then water the product afterward for best results.
It is important to note that Prodiamine must be watered to be effective. Since Prodiamine is a pre-emergent herbicide, watering in the active ingredient will activate it so it can effectively prevent weed germination.
Is Prodiamine Safe?
Prodiamine is safe to use when applied according to label instructions. It is recommended that proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is used before handling or applying Prodiamine. Gloves, protective eyewear, and long-sleeved clothing should be the minimum standard. Please refer to the label for proper safety instructions.
