"The best time to apply Prodiamine products is when soil temperatures are low before weed seeds begin to germinate, usually no higher than 55 degrees Fahrenheit."

Prodiamine

When the temperatures drop in the Winter, homeowners may feel that they will soon see the end of troublesome weeds such as Crabgrass. However, the seeds of these weeds stay alive in lawns while in hiding, using all the nutrients of your soil to hibernate and rise up in the Spring to ugly up your yard. When these weeds emerge, they can be extremely difficult to control.

That’s why it would be wise to stop weeds like Crabgrass before it emerges onto your turf with a pre-emergent active ingredient like Prodiamine. Solutions Pest & Lawn has some great herbicide products which contain the active ingredient Prodiamine and we regularly recommend it to our customers who want to prevent dealing with Crabgrass and other stubborn weeds.

On this page we will share with you background info about Prodiamine, it’s mode of action and benefits. You can also access this page to shop our entire line of Prodiamine-based products.

What is Prodiamine?

Prodiamine is an active ingredient used in pre-emergent herbicides. Prodiamine works to control grasses and broadleaf weeds before they have sprung up from the soil by preventing the weed seeds from germinating. By using it once or twice a year, pre-emergents help control pesky weeds which may be a recurring problem on a landscape.

Prodiamine is registered for commercial use to control weeds in nurseries, landscaping, turf farms, Christmas tree farms, golf courses, and more.  Prodiamine can also be safely used on certain types of desirable grasses without harming them, such as Bermudagrass, Fescue, St. Augustine and common turf grasses.

How Does Prodiamine Work?

Mode of Action

Prodiamine prevents root growth by blocking plant cell division steps needed for chromosome separation and cell wall formation. Prodiamine is a pre-emergent herbicide, so essentially it acts as a sort of birth control for the target weed, preventing the weed seed from growing.

Benefits of Prodiamine

Prodiamine is a solid product active ingredient for pre-emergent weed control. Most products containing Prodiamine have a broad label of different weeds that can successfully be controlled.

Drawbacks of Prodiamine

While we don’t want to discount the effectiveness of Prodiamine and how it has successfully controlled plenty of different weeds, it is important to note that with Prodiamine or any pre-emergent herbicide, that the results may not be 100 percent. Depending on the resilience and stubbornness of some hard-to-control weeds, there may still be some weeds that pop up during growing season meaning that some post-emergent treatment may have to still be conducted.

What To Expect

Prodiamine usually comes in a WDG or powder form and is to be mixed with water in a pump sprayer. It could also come in granule form and would have to be applied using a granular spreader.

Spray Application

Spraying Lawn Prodiamine

First, you should measure your yard's square footage to determine how much of the Prodiamine-based product you need. Following the label instructions of the product, mix the appropriate amount of Prodiamine into your selected sprayer with water and then broadcast the product over your yard at the proper timing (before your target weed has germinated). After spraying the product, you will need to water your grass.

Granular Application

prodiamine spreader

Measure your yard's square footage (length x width) to determine how much granules you will need. Load your Prodiamine active ingredient product your properly calibrated spreader based on the label directions for rates. Broadcast the granules over your entire yard prior to weed germination and then water the product in afterward for best results.

It is important to note that Prodiamine will need to be watered in to be effective. Since Prodiamine is a pre-emergent herbicide, watering in the active ingredient will activate it so it can effectively prevent weed germination.

Is Prodiamine Safe?

Prodiamine is safe to use when applied according to label instructions. It is recommended that when mixing or applying Prodiamine to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) before handling or applying. Gloves, protective eyewear, and long-sleeved clothing should be the minimum standard. Please refer to the label for proper safety instructions.
