Fuerte Ornamental Herbicide
Fuerte Ornamental Herbicide is a low-dust, pre-emergent granular herbicide that provides long-lasting control of broadleaf and grassy weeds in ornamentals, landscape beds, Christmas tree farms, and non-crop areas.
09/09/25
Fuerte Ornamental Herbicide, manufactured by OHP, is a dust-reduced granular pre-emergent herbicide that stops broadleaf and grassy weeds before they sprout in container, field, and landscape ornamentals and non-cropland areas for up to 3 months.
Built with a dual-active formula of flumioxazin and prodiamine, this herbicide creates a long-lasting soil barrier that keeps weeds such as poa annua, chickweed, crabgrass, and more from germinating while leaving ornamentals untouched. As a result, ornamentals are given a competitive headstart in their growth thus increasing bloomage and yield.
Fuerte Ornamental Herbicide delivers reliable, season-long control of both grassy and broadleaf weeds in ornamentals, ground maintenance, and non-cropland sites. But what really sets this product apart is its engineered granule technology. Unlike many granular herbicides that create dusty clouds during application, Fuerte Ornamental Herbicide is formulated with significantly reduced dust, improving worker safety, comfort, and application precision.
Tools Needed
A handheld spreader, push spreader, or broadcast spreader will be needed.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Fuerte Ornamental Herbicide to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. Find the square footage by measuring the treatment area's length and width in feet, then multiplying them together (length X width = square footage). A general application will use 2.29 pounds of Fuerte Ornamental Herbicide per 1,000 sq. ft. Refer to the product label for specific application rates and restrictions.
- Step 2: Calibrate the spreader to the proper settings then load with the needed amount of granules.
- Step 3: Before each application, remove any existing weeds. Spread the granules evenly across the soil surface. After application, irrigate with 1/2 inches of rainfall or irrigation to activate the herbicide barrier. For season-long weed control, a repeat application is required at approximately a 3-month interval during the growing season, but do not make more than two applications per year or apply 200 pounds of this product per acre per year.
Where to Use
Fuerte Ornamental Herbicide can be used in field, container and landscape ornamentals, grounds maintenance, and non-cropland areas. Also for Christmas tree farms and conifer farms.
Do not apply to vegetable crops. Do not use on fruit trees that will bear fruit within one year of application.
When to Use
Apply when weeds are not present on days. If you do not plan to irrigate the treated area, time applications when rainfall is forecasted to occur within 24 hours of application.
Do not apply to recently transplanted liners with root balls less than 4 inches in diameter until plants have been actively growing for at least 6 weeks after transplanting and have established a vigorous root system.
Do not apply when extreme cold stress (35 degrees Fahrenheit or lower) is expected.
Safety Information
Fuerte Ornamental Herbicide is safe for people and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling and applying this product.
Do not graze or feed forage from treated fields to livestock.
Keep people and pets out of the treated area for 24 hours after application.
Special Considerations
Do not apply while plants are producing a new flush of spring growth. Tender, newly forming leaves are especially sensitive and may be injured by the herbicide.

Keith's Pro Tips | "In order for Fuerte Ornamental Herbicide to provide maximum preemergence weed control activity, use the following cultural practices. Prior to application, the bed or soil surface should be smooth and free of crop and weed trash (decaying leaves, clippings, dead weeds, etc.). Leaves and trash may be removed by blowing the area to be treated or by thoroughly mixing the trash into the soil through cultivation prior to herbicide application." |
Product Drawbacks | Injury to recently transplanted liners is most likely when Fuerte is applied to smaller liners (less than one gallon container size), at above labeled rates, and is applied before potting media has been settled by irrigation or rainfall. |
