"Make sure to remove existing weeds through handpulling and post-emergent sprayings before using Isoxaben. Any remnants could make the application ineffective in removing your target weed."

Isoxaben

In the Fall, cool weather weeds can begin creeping up and readying themselves to emerge in the spring. It is because of this that it would be wise to apply pre-emergent herbicides to your lawn. One such pre-emergent herbicide active ingredient that does a great job of keeping weeds at bay is Isoxaben.

Solutions Pest & Lawn has a quality selection of herbicide products in stock that contains the active ingredient Isoxaben and we highly recommend this product to our customers who want to control broadleaf weeds. On this page you can gain some background info about Isoxaben, it’s mode of action and benefits. You can also access this page to shop our recommended Isoxaben-based products.

What is Isoxaben?

Isoxaben is a broad-spectrum pre-emergent herbicide for broadleaf weeds, grasses, vines, around ornamental trees and shrubs. Since Isoxaben is a pre-emergent herbicide, it is used to hinder or prevent weed seeds from germinating.

Isoxaben is a white to off-white solid with a musty odor that is formulated into water-dispersible powders and granules or liquid concentrates. Formulated Isoxaben products contain 0.25–75% active ingredient, with the balance solvents and stabilizers.

How Does Isoxaben Work?

Mode of Action

Isoxaben is a cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor (CBI) that disrupts an enzyme necessary for protein synthesis. This disruption halts the germination and growth of susceptible weeds so they do not grow past the seed stage.

Benefits of Isoxaben

Isoxaben is effective in suppressing the growth of a broad range of weeds and, in most cases, can deliver up to 8 months of control. This means you can prevent problem weeds almost all year long. Isoxaben is also selective, so it will only target the problem weeds you want to keep from growing and cause no harm to desired plants.

Drawbacks of Isoxaben

Since Isoxaben is a pre-emergent herbicide active ingredient, it will not be effective in controlling weeds that have already germinated or are firmly established.

Is Isoxaben Safe?

Isoxaben is safe to use on established turf and around ornamentals when applied correctly according to label directions. When using products containing Isoxaben, please make sure to have on the proper PPE in the form of long-sleeved clothing, gloves and protective eyewear. Check the label for detailed safety instructions. After applying, keep people and pets off the treated area until the product has totally dried.

What To Expect

Isoxaben should be applied in late summer to early fall, in early spring, or any time prior to germination of target weeds, or immediately after cultivation. Most applications should be followed up by watering the area so the product better incorporates into the soil surface.

When the application is timed right, you should expect problem weeds to be unable to grow for up to eight months.
