How To Control Squirrelssquirrel control

If you have a yard, there’s a large chance that you’ll have squirrels. Most squirrels are relatively harmless and some are even nice to have around to observe but they can be considered a pest similar to rodents when they begin to get too close to humans and our property. There are many species of squirrels but the most problematic one may very well be the tree squirrel. However, there doesn’t necessarily need to be trees around for squirrels to be present on your yard or garden as there are also ground squirrels that commonly rummage around humans as well. Squirrels move very quickly so it may seem that they would be difficult to control, however it is possible.

At Solutions Pest and Lawn, we have all the products you need to get rid of squirrels at an affordable price, as well as free how-to advice from our experts to make your property squirrel-free.

Squirrel Background Information

Squirrels are small rodents which hail from the Sciuridae family. The squirrel family is quite vast, consisting of many different types of squirrels: tree squirrels, ground squirrels, flying squirrels among others. The squirrel is indigenous to the Americas as well as Eurasia and Africa. Tree and ground squirrels are also the most common ones which humans encounter.

Squirrels range in size from very small, to medium sized depending on the species. Squirrels generally have slender bodies with long bushy tails and large eyes. Their fur is usually soft and silk. They also vary in color, from brown to grayish depending on the species.

A squirrel's diet consists of high amounts of protein, carbohydrates and fats. Squirrels eat a  wide variety of plants, including nuts, seeds, conifer cones, fruits, fungi, and green vegetation. However, some squirrels also consume meat, especially when they lack other options and are hungry. Squirrels have been known to eat insects, eggs, small birds, young snakes, and smaller rodents. Indeed, some tropical species have shifted almost entirely to a diet of insects

Although most squirrels are welcomed in parks and around the yard, they are a pest once inside the home or around a garden. They are known to do some extensive damage to gardens by picking at plants and ripping into flower bulbs and buds.

When displaced from their natural habitat in the woods, squirrels go on a hunt for new shelter. If the conditions allow it,  they’ll move into attics, eaves and soffits of any structure. Once inside a building, they will cause damage to insulation, rafters and electric wires. This is a particularly dangerous hazard as squirrels damaging wiring has been known to be the cause of electrical fires in a home.

Tips on Controlling Squirrels

If you don’t like squirrels in your yard, there are some things you can do that will help in keeping them away. However, depending on where you live, some methods of control would not work best over others. For example, if you live out in a rural country area, shooting, trapping or fumigating areas can be an appropriate way to eliminate squirrels, but if the city some of those methods would not be allowed in certain areas.

Another factor to consider when trying to tackle squirrel control is knowing what type of squirrel you are dealing with, which may definitely vary when it comes to control approaches. If you have a problem with ground squirrels, you might want to try flooding or baiting their burrows. This keeps them away because they will have their home taken away and will go elsewhere to find another. They will seek less hostile ground and stay away from your area.

For tree squirrels that are trying to get into your home you can use a natural repellant or use recommended exclusion methods such as: trimming tree branches that may overhang your roof line or touch your home, remove firewood stacks against your home, repairing and sealing cracks and crevices. These methods will make it harder for squirrels to get into your attic, basement or any crawl space.
