What is Rimsulfuron?

Rimsulfuron is a chemical compound that belongs to the sulfonylureas family of organic compounds. Rimsulfuron has commonly been used as a herbicide on agricultural farms to provide control around maize, citrus fruits, and nuts. 

On landscapes, Rimsulfuron is known to provide post-emergent systemic control of annual and perennial broad-leaf weeds and sedges. Products containing Rimsulfuron can be applied as foliar sprays, where it is absorbed through the plant's leaves and travels down to the plants' roots for control.

How Does Rimsulfuron Work?

Mode of Action

Rimsulfuron’s action involves interfering with the acetolactate synthase enzyme in targeted weeds. This inhibition slows cell division and hinders the weed's growth at all phases of development.

Acetolactate synthase (ALS), or acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS), is an essential enzyme in plants. Without this enzyme, the plant cannot produce specific amino acids (isoleucine, leucine, and valine), thereby preventing protein formation.

Rimsulfuron is a flexible herbicide that is both a pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide. This gives it active flexibility in killing established weeds that have already germinated in an area and keeping weeds from growing in the first place.

Is Rimsulfuron Safe?

Rimsulfuron is safe to use when applied according to label directions. When handling Rimsulfuron (or any of the other chemicals we carry), it is recommended to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) before handling or applying. Gloves, goggles, and long-sleeved clothing should be the minimum standard. Please refer to the label for proper safety instructions.

What To Expect

Rimsulfuron-based products should be applied to the target area and then watered in afterward. Rimsulfuron becomes rainfast four hours after application. Established weeds die between one and three weeks after application, and new young weeds die a few days after germinating. Some weeds are more resilient and may require a repeat application in four to six weeks.
