How To Get Rid of Lizards

You know any guests who always come uninvited to a party? Mr. and Mrs. Lizard. You are there, all happy and trying to play the perfect hostess, and suddenly there darts out a creepy-crawly, making its way to another wall. Not only is this embarrassing, but dangerous too. While household lizards are not venomous, they sure do leave germs behind. A fun but creepy fact about lizards is that some of them have the ability to regenerate. When a person tries to grab a lizard, it purposely drops it tail, so that when the human is busy trying to solve the mystery of the wiggling tail; it has the chance to escape. This here is one more reason why you should not grab lizards while trying to kill them.

About Lizards

There are more than 6,000 species of lizards belonging to 40 families. Out of all these, there are only 3 venomous lizard species, which are known as the Komodo dragon, the Gila monster and the Mexican Beaded Lizard. They are found in the western and northern coast of Mexico and Southeastern coast of the US.

Lizards come in various shapes, sizes and colors. They can survive in different environments such as water and on dry land. Most of them are fast sprinters, hence our fear of them coming too close and biting us, which is not their nature. Lizards are attracted to food and other insects such as flies, mosquitoes, ants, beetles, grasshopper and spiders. They usually hide in dark places like cupboards, wardrobes, furniture, etc. They can enter your house through pipes, vents, windows and cracks in the foundation. Lizard infestation usually starts from the kitchen and bathroom where there is more dirt. Following are some natural remedies that you can use to kill lizards:

Home Remedies to Get Rid Of Lizards:

Coffee Powder

Coffee and tobacco powder are quite effective in killing lizards. Take both powders and make some balls. Insert a toothpick or a matchstick in the balls and keep it behind cupboards and shelves. Lizards will die on the spot as soon as they eat the balls. Before disposing off their bodies, don’t forget to wear gloves.

Egg Shells

This is an age old remedy that has been passed down from generations to generations. Egg shells are a foolproof way to keep lizards away from your house. Lizards hate eggs’ smell. You can tie egg shells with strings, and hang them in your house near windows and doors.

Pepper Spray

Instead of spending dollars on buying insect killing sprays, make one at home. Mix chili powder and ground black pepper in water. Pour this in a spray bottle and spray it around the house. The strong odor of both the spices will keep lizards away. What’s better is that this will not stain your cupboards or wardrobes.

Garlic

Many household insects hate the smell of garlic. You can hang or place garlic cloves around your house especially near windows and doors. You can also create a garlic spray by mixing water and garlic juice. Use this spray in small amounts or the entire house will smell like garlic.

Onion

Onion can keep lizards away from your house forever. Onions also have a pungent smell that lizards hate. Same remedies can be applied as explained above for garlic. You can either hang it in the house or make a spray.

Peacock Feathers

A peacock’s favorite meal is lizard. By placing peacock feathers around entrances and areas where you usually see lizards, you can scare them away.

Naphthalene Balls

Naphthalene balls are used to keep a number of insects away like spiders, bedbugs and lizards. Since they are hazardous, strew them in high places such as shelves and cupboards. The smell of these balls will prevent lizards forever from entering your house.

Tabasco Sauce

In the longstanding line of spices and sprays that lizards can’t stand comes one more: Tabasco sauce. Mix two teaspoons of Tabasco sauce in water and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Don’t spray it freely around the house, as it may burn your eyes. Instead, spray it behind cupboards, in the corners and on window panes.

Cold Water

In the mood to kill a lizard? Here’s an easy way:

  • In a spray bottle, add some ice and water

  • As soon as you see a lizard, spray on it directly

  • The cold water will immobilize the lizard for a while and you can bag it easily

Bird Feathers

Most of the birds eat lizards. To scare away lizards, strew feathers of birds in the house. This will trick the lizards into believing that there are birds living in the house and they will not enter the house. You can even make attractive decorations from bird feathers and keep them in plain sight. It’s a win-win.

Phenyl Tablets

Phenyl is mostly used to clean bathrooms but it is also a great agent that keeps lizards away. Spread some phenyl balls around the house, especially near windows. The smell of the balls will repel the lizards.

How to Prevent Lizard Infestation

The best way to prevent lizards from entering your house in the first place, is to follow the below steps:

  • Get rid of other insects that have been infesting your house

  • Seal entry points

  • Use sticky cardboard traps. Solutions has plenty of different options for glueboards with many of them being meant for rats and mice but could also work to capture insects and of course lizards. We recommend Trapper Max Mouse Glue Trap or the Catchmaster 72MB Glue Board.

The cleaner your environment, the harder it will be for the lizards to find any food and they will leave on their own. In the mean time, try these above natural remedies to get rid of lizards already present in your house.

Conclusion

Lizards for the most part are a beneficial animal to us, WHEN THEY’RE OUTSIDE. They eat plenty of bugs which we wouldn’t want in the house. Lizards scurrying around your home can be startling. By following these tips and applying glue boards around, you can capture that lizard and dispose of them promptly.
