Certainty Turf Herbicide
Certainty Turf Herbicide
Certainty Turf Herbicide, manufactured by Monsanto, is an excellent selective, post-emergent herbicide containing the active ingredient Sulfosulfuron. Certainty Herbicide is easy to use and has a broad label for grass and broadleaf weeds.
This easy to use water dispensable granule offers dependable control over hard-to-manage weeds through the active ingredient sulfosulfuron 75%, combined with its ability to be applied in a variety of seasons to turf without harm. Its flexibility is further seen with its ability to be applied directly or over the top to newly seeded turf or established ornamentals.
Certainty Turf Herbicide is an ideal herbicide to quickly eliminating weeds in warm-seasoned turf, resulting in the successful removal of unwanted cool-seasoned turfgrass such as fescue, perennial ryegrass, Poa annua, and poa trivialis.
Tools Needed
To use Certainty Turf Herbicide, you will need to mix the product into a sprayer of your choosing such as a backpack or hand-pump sprayer. For the average job, a hand-pump gallon sprayer works best.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Certainty Turf Herbicide to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment site. To do this, measure the length and width of the treatment site in feet and multiply (length x width = square footage). For acreage, take the square footage and divide it by one acre (square footage / 43,560 = acre). A general application of Certainty Turf Herbicide will use 1.25 oz. of product (equivalent to 5 small (0.16 gram) scoops) per 10 to 15 gallons of water per acre. For smaller treatment areas, use 0.75 oz. (equivalent to 1 large (0.8 gram) scoop) per 3 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft. The combined total of all treatments must not exceed 2.66 oz. of this product per acre per year.
- Step 2: In a sprayer of your choice, fill the sprayer 3/4ths of the way with water and add the appropriate amount of Certainty Turf Herbicide needed for your application. Fill the sprayer the rest of the way with water, close the lid and shake the sprayer well to ensure it is mixed. Once mixed, you can add and mix in a nonionic surfactant to enhance the product (at a rate of 2 teaspoons or 1/3rd fl. oz. per gallon of water).
- Step 3: Spot treat or spray the target areas, preferably with the sprayer on a fan spray setting for uniform coverage. Monitor the weeds and conduct a follow-up application of Certainty Turf Herbicide as needed after 1 to 2 weeks to achieve complete control.
Where to Use
Certainty Herbicide can be applied to labeled weeds on highly managed turf, native grasses, landscaped areas and ornamental nurseries. This product may be applied to residential and commercial sites, including apartment complexes, athletic fields, cemeteries, golf course fairways, golf course roughs, golf course tees, and other golf course areas, hotel properties, nurseries, office complexes, parks, public areas, retail sites, storage facilities, school grounds, sod and turfgrass seed farms, and other highly managed turfgrass sites.
This product is not for use on golf course putting greens.
When to Use
Certainty Turf Herbicide should be sprayed when weeds are small and actively growing early in the season. Make sure not to disturb areas with mowing at least 2 days before or 2 days after application.
Safety Information
Certainty Turf Herbicide is safe to use around children and kids when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling or applying this product.
Keep people and pets off treated areas until spray solution has dried.
Special Considerations
Heavy rainfall within 2 hours of application may wash this product off of treated foliage and may result in having to do a repeat application to achieve control.

Q:Live in TX and I want to use on my st augustine. Is it safe to use it?5/6/23A:Certainty Turf Herbicide has been shown to be safe for use on established warm-seasoned turfgrasses such as St. Augustinegrass. St. Augustinegrass may be more sensitive to this product than other grasses depending on environmental conditions, cultivar differences, and other influential factors. For St. Augustinegrass, test the product on a small area before treating the entire lawn to determine if this product is suitable for your management and cultural practices.

Q:Lost my scoop, how much do I mis to a 2 gal sorayer? Also, is it best to spray in the morning? Lastly, will it kill plants and shrubs if accidentally sprayed? please help!!3/7/23A:If you are using a 2 gallon sprayer, then you will want to use 0.75 oz. of Certainty Turf Herbicide per 2 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft. for smaller treatment areas. This product can be sprayed in the morning, but best results are obtained when target weeds are actively growing and not disturbed by mowing for at least 2 days before and 2 days after application. Also, spray when rainfall or irrigation is not predicted within 2 hours after application. This product is highly toxic to non-target plants. Avoid contact of this product with the roots or foliage of susceptible non-target vegetation as injury may occur. This includes areas where this product may be washed or moved into contact with roots of desirable vegetation. It should only be used over the top of warm-seasoned turfgrass and on weeds in labeled ornamental sites. Refer to page 4 of the product label as it lists all ornamentals this product can be used with.

Q:Tank Mix combination- Sethoxydim and Sulfosulfuron? I need to kill the bermuda grass, POA and crabgrass my pre-emergent missed (Podiamine+Tenacity) in my centipede lawn along with a lot of Purple Netsedge (aka, The Anti-Christ). I would like to mix Certainty and Bonide over the top grass killer (Seulfosulfuron and Sethoxydim), but am concerned about how much to use and if I can. Also need to know if I should use MethSeed Oil or a regular Non-Ionic surfactant if I can mix them. Help! If these cannot be mixed, do you know of another combination that will help? If I can't mix them, how long do I have to wait between applications if I need to lay down both separately?5/27/22A:You will not be able to kill the bermuda in the Centipede grass without killing both. The certainty is good for the purple nutsedge and the Poa. Do not use MSO on turf applications. That is really only good for non-selective vegetation control. Instead use Alligare 90 or another Non-Ionic surfactant. As far as the crabgrass is concerned, the Sethoxydim will only kill the crabgrass up to the 3-4 tillar stage of the plant's life, after that it has little effect on the more mature plant. I would do separate apps with these as there are no labeled recommendations on combined use for these. 3-4 weeks apart should be a good time interval for the follow up applications. Mow your centipede grass as tall as you can tolerate it to help shade out and better compete with the undesirable bermuda. The bermuda won't like that, and will not spread and propagate as much in these conditions.
