Surge Broadleaf Herbicide for Turf, manufactured by PBI Gordon, is a selective, post-emergent herbicide with 4 active ingredients for fast-acting, broad-spectrum weed control. Surge can treat annual, biennial, and perennial broadleaf weeds.

Surge Broadleaf Herbicide is similar to other three-way herbicides but also contains sulfentrazone, a powerful herbicide that inhibits an enzyme (Protox) used for chlorophyll production. This causes plant cell membranes of weeds to rupture. After application, weed injury can be seen within hours.

Surge Broadleaf Herbicide can selectively kill weeds in both cool-season and warm-season grasses and is rainfast within 6 hours. It will help you get rapid and effective results against even the toughest weeds, such as dandelion, spurge, white clover, and dollar weed.

Tools Needed

To use Surge Broadleaf Herbicide, you will need a handheld sprayer, a hose-end sprayer, a backpack sprayer, or a spray rig for large-volume applications.

How to Use

  • Step 1: Determine how much Surge Broadleaf Herbicide For Turf you will need by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. Do this by measuring the length and width of the treatment area in feet, then multiplying them together (length X width = square feet). To find acreage, take your square feet and divide by one acre (square footage / 43,560 sq. ft. = acreage). Your mix rate will vary depending on the turf you are treating and the targeted weed type. For acreage application on cool season turf, you will mix between 3.25 to 4 pints of Surge Broadleaf Herbicide for Turf per 10 to 220 gallons of water per acre. For a small application rate of cool-seasoned turf, use 1.2 to 1.5 oz. of product per 0.23 to 5.0 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft. For acreage application on warm-seasoned turf, apply 2.75 to 3.25 pints of product per 10 to 220 gallons of water per acre. Smaller applications on warm-seasoned turf use 1.0 to 1.2 oz. of product per
  • 0.23 to 5.0 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft.
  • Step 2: Mix and fill your sprayer halfway with water. Add the required amount of Surge Herbicide based on your treatment area. Then, fill the sprayer the rest of the way with water and shake it to ensure an even mix. If adding liquid fertilizer, mix your Surge solution first.
  • Step 3: Surge can be applied as a spot or broadcast spray. Spray the weed with a fan spray setting, holding the nozzle stationary over the weed to ensure even coverage. Spray weeds to wet, not runoff. For hard-to-control weeds, reapplication may be necessary after 30 days.

Where to Use

Surge Broadleaf Herbicide for Turf can be used on cool and warm-season grasses in institutional sites, such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools, museums, libraries, sports facilities, golf courses (fairways, aprons, and roughs) and office buildings; ornamental sites such as parks, streets, retail outlets, cemeteries, industrial and institutional buildings, recreation areas, fairgrounds, areas adjacent to athletic fields; residential sites such as lawns, apartment complexes, condos, nursing homes; non-cropland sites such as rights-of-ways, roadsides, ditches, shoulders, embankments, dividers, medians, parking areas, fencerows, and more. Agricultural sites are limited to commercial sod production sites only.

When to Use

Use on calm days when wind speeds are low to minimize drift. Apply Surge when rain is not in the immediate forecast for at least 6 hours. Best results will be seen when applied when weeds are young and actively growing at the start of the growing season, in early spring or early fall. A follow-up application may be necessary every 30 days for established, hard-to-control weeds.
