These products are effective and are a great alternative to consider for your pest control program. Wettable powders are a specialized formulation of insecticide where the active ingredient has been ground into powder form to be mixed well with water and then sprayed onto surfaces and into cracks crevices and voids.

On this page we will touch on the benefits of wettable powders, how they are formulated, and how to properly apply these products to achieve the best possible results. You can also shop the Wettable powder formulations at Solutions Pest & Lawn.

What is a Wettable Powder?

A wettable powder is a type of chemical that is manufactured and shipped in a powder form and then mixed with a liquid before being applied to any surface. Wettable powders are dry and finely ground formulations the look similar to dusts.

Wettable powders usually must be mixed with water and be applied as a spray to treat for insects. Some types of wettable powders can either be applied as a dust or as a wettable powder with the choice being left up to the applicator.

The development of wettable powders came from the need of pest control operators to have a more effective means of getting pesticide chemicals to have a longer lasting residual effect for porous surfaces. The larger particle size of the wettable powder makes it well suited for applications on concrete and brick where the particle will not absorb into the porous surface.

Wettable powders are manufactured chemicals that are shipped and stored dry and mixed only right before application using water. They are able to be supplied in bulk and then pre-measured in water-soluble packaging to decrease user exposure to concentrated chemicals. Wettable powders contain 5 to 95 percent of the active ingredient by weight though the active ingredient is usually 50 percent or more.

The packet of powder is simply diluted with a liquid in the sprayer or tank. The water soluble packets that contain wettable powders decrease overdosing or harmful spillage, which can be harmful to the surrounding environments.

Using diluted powders also lowers the trace amount of chemicals released into the air due to the heaviness of water and low concentration compared to other liquid pesticides or herbicides.

Why Buy These Products

Ideal Conditions for Using Wettable Powder Insecticides

Wettable powders make a great choice, especially when applying to porous surfaces like concrete and unfinished wood where water seeps into the material. Once the water has been dried out and evaporated, the powder remains onto the surface of wherever it is applied, ready and waiting to be picked up by offending pests and insects.

Wettable powder particles do not dissolve in water. They settle out quickly unless they are constantly agitated to keep them suspended. They can be used for more pest problems and in most types of spray equipment where agitation is possible. Wettable powders have excellent residual activity. Due to their physical properties, most of the pesticide remains on the surface of treated porous materials such as concrete, plaster and untreated wood. In such cases only the water penetrates the material.

For instance, when an insecticide concentrate is mixed and sprayed on a wood surface, much of the active ingredient is absorbed into the wood or evaporates.  When a wettable powder solution is sprayed on the same surface, 100% of the active ingredients are left on the surface of the wood.

This feature provides a faster knock-down of insects and other pests.  When dealing with infestations of spiders, centipedes, millipedes, German cockroaches and other irritating pests, the extra knock-down delivered by a wettable powder is ideal.  This insecticide formulation also gives a 90 day (or better) residual; emulsifiable concentrated products give 28 to 31 days residual.

Benefits of Using Wettable Powders

Using WP products is a smart choice for those who do not wish to regularly apply insecticides to control various problematic pests. Wettable powder products can get to those hard to reach cracks and crevices that normal insecticide sprays can access but with the added benefit of remaining there long after the water has evaporated.

This allows the WP product's active ingredient to remain where it has been spray to provide better knockdown insects which are unfortunate enough to come into contact with the product. When dealing with heavy infestations of spiders, cockroaches, millipedes and other similar insects, this is ideal.

WP formulations typically give about a 90 day (or better) residual effect. Your typical liquid or emulsifiable concentrated products give between 28 to 31 days residual. This longer residual effect time means that weekly or monthly spraying of your home is no longer necessary. This product will continue doing it’s job long after that first spraying.

Other benefits include: Easy to store, transport, and handle. Wettable powder is less likely than EC's and other pesticides to cause unwanted harm to treated plants, animals, and surfaces. Easy to measure and mix. Less likely to have skin and eye absorption than EC's and other liquid formulations. No odor.

Drawbacks of using Wettable Powders? (When should it NOT be used)

One of the main drawbacks of wettable powders is that it usually leaves a visible residue wherever it has been sprayed. Some other disadvantages to using wettable powders include the fact that it requires repeated agitation of the spray tank so the wettable powder doesn’t settle or clog the nozzle and they may be abrasive to pumps and nozzles causing them to wear out more quickly.

Wettable powders can also be hazardous to uneducated applicators who may be at risk of inhaling the concentrated powder while measuring and mixing. As a result, the EPA has recently been cracking down on packaging of WP products. Typically now you will see WP products in premeasured water soluble packets so applicators will not breathe in the chemical while opening and mixing.

Things To Consider When Using Wettable Powders

  • - Please use wettable powders according to the instruction label.

  • - Wettable powders can clog spray equipment easily and frequently if they are not agitated properly, or the equipment does not have the proper filters to handle wettable powders. Always shake really well when using wettable powders and begin application immediately after powder has been mixed with water.  Wettable powder solutions will need to be agitated or shaken frequently to remain uniformly mixed.

  • - Wettable powder formulations can leave a visible and unsightly residue on darker surfaces.

  • - Other than these minor disadvantages, wettable powders are a great choice if you want long-lasting control without frequently needing to conduct repeated applications.
