Surflan AS Specialty Herbicide

Surflan AS Speciality Herbicide, manufactured by UPI, is an effective commercial pre-emergent herbicide that offers selective control over various weeds for landscape professionals, groundskeepers, and turf managers. 

This pre-emergent contains oryzalin, which forms a chemical barrier in the soil to stop weed seeds from growing, offering long-lasting residual control for up to 8 months. The “AS” in the name stands for aqueous suspension, which allows for easy mixing with water for spray applications or tank mixes.

Tools Needed

A handheld pump sprayer, backpack sprayer, hose-end sprayer, or spray rig can be used. 

How to Use

• Step 1: Determine how much Surflan AS Specialty Herbicide to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. Find the square footage by measuring the treatment area's length and width in feet, then multiply them together (length X width = square footage). For acreage, take the square footage and divide it by one acre (square footage / 43,560 sq. ft. = acres). For landscape ornamentals, apply 1.5 fl. oz. of Surflan AS Specialty Herbicide per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft. Refer to the product label for specific application rates and restrictions. 
• Step 2: Fill the spray tank with half the amount of water, add the proper amount of product, then pour in the remaining half of water into the tank. Close the sprayer tank and shake until mixed. 
• Step 3: Spray over the treatment area until wet, but not to the point of runoff. After application, irrigate the treatment area with 1/2 inch of water. 

Where to Use

Surflan AS Specialty Herbicide can be used for landscape ornamentals, container grown ornamentals, field grown ornamentals, drainage areas under shadehouse benches, ornamental bulbs, ground covers/perennials, Christmas tree plantations, non-bearing fruit and nut trees and non-bearing vineyards, noncropland sites, industrial sites, and warm-seasoned turf.

Do not apply to dichondra or cool-seasoned turfgrass species. 

When to Use

Apply when ornamentals and turf are well-established, but before weeds appear. 

Safety Information

Surflan AS Speciality Herbicide is safe for people and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product. 

Keep people and pets out of the treatment area for 24 hours after application. 

Special Considerations

To avoid injury, do not apply to pots less than 4 inches wide. 

Applications of Surflan AS over the top of plants with newly forming buds may cause injury. In this situation a directed spray is recommended.
