Southern Ag Surflan AS, manufactured by Southern Agricultural Products, is a pre-emergent herbicide that eliminates various types of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds for up to 4 months.

Formulated with oryzalin 40.4% to inhibit the cell division of weeds such as crabgrass or common groundsel leading to stunt of growth and cease of activity.

Southern Ag Surflan AS is an effective low-use and economic liquid herbicide that can be used on different types of ornamental turf and warm-seasoned grass such as bahiagrass, Bermudagrass, buffalograss, centipedegrass, St. Augustine grass, zoysiagrass, and tall fescue.

Tools Needed

To use Southern Ag Surflan AS, you will need to mix and apply the herbicide in a backpack sprayer, handheld pump sprayer, or ground application equipment.

Do not use aerial application equipment or irrigation system.

How to Use

Spraying Turf

  • Step 1: Determine how much Southern Ag Surflan AS to use by calculating the square footage of the treatment site. If unsure, then measure the length and width of the treatment area in feet and follow the formula (length X width = square footage). To find acerage, take the square footage and divide it by one acre (square footage / 43,560 = acre). For warm-seasoned turf, apply 1 to 1.5 oz. of Southern Ag Surflan AS per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft. Ornamental turfs will use the rate of 1.5 to 3 oz. of product per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft. Acreage applications for warm-seasoned turf and ornamental turf will use 2 quarts of product per 3 gallons of water per acre. Do not reseed for 90 to 120 days following application.
  • Step 2: Shake well before mixing. Pour half the amount of water into the spray tank, add the measured amount of Southern Ag Surflan AS, then fill the rest of the way with remaining half of water. Maintain continuous agitation until solution is well mixed or if separation occurs.
  • Step 3: Apply the Southern Ag Surflan AS solution mixture directly to the top of plants on a low pressure spray, but avoid overlaps. Water immediately after treatment or at least 21 days after first application. A second application may be required when 8 to 10 weeks have passed after first application. Do not make second applications on container grown ornamentals until 90 days have passed from the first application.

Where to Use

Southern Ag Surflan AS may be applied to landscape ornamentals, container grown ornamentals, field grown ornamentals, drainage areas under shadehouse benches, ornamental bulbs, ground covers, Christmas tree plantations, noncropland and industrial sites, non-bearing fruit and nut trees and non-bearing vineyards, established warm-seasoned turf, ornamental plantings (trees, shrubs, ground covers/perennials, flowers), and ice plant.

Refer to the label for specific plant species this product may be used on.

Do not use on cool-seasoned turfgrass, golf courses putting greens, golf course tees, lawns, in enclosed greenhouses, in enclosed shadehouse structures, nursery, forest, directly on christmas trees, seedling beds, cutting beds, transplant beds, newly sprigged or sodded areas of bermudagrass, St. Augustinegrass, centipedegrass, or zoysiagrass.

When to Use

Use Southern Ag Surflan AS before weeds emerge in your lawn and ornamental plantings. The best time to apply this product is when your plants are well-established and before conditions become favorable for weed germination such as during the late winter or early spring. To control winter broadleaf weeds, apply during the fall on days where there is no cloudy weather.

Do not apply Southern Ag Surflan AS in the spring or early summer to tall fescue turfgrass reseeded the previous fall.
