Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator
Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator
Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator, manufactured by Arborjet, is a highly effective plant growth regulator that prevents trees and shrubs from overgrowing and produces denser vegetation.
Features a unique formula which provides an excellent method of keeping plants from producing debris, drought and heat stress. This plant growth regulator works by inhibiting gibberellin biosynthesis, which is needed for plants to grow and become taller.
Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator quickly benefits trees and shrubs by redistributing energy to increase root production, altering leaf physiology to reduce water vapor loss, and increasing the production of chlorophyll to aid in the process of photosynthesis. Treating with this product can help business owners and homeowners cut labor costs from manual pruning, saving time and money for pruning, and plant clean-up labor.
Tools Needed
To use Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator, you will need to use a graduated container/jug or with a handheld hose connected to a truck-mounted tank/hydraulic sprayer (spray rig).
Do not apply by air or with a ground boom sprayer.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. To do this, measure the length and width of the treatment area in feet then multiply them together (length X width = square footage). For acreage, take the square footage and divide it by one acre (square footage / 43,560 sq. ft. = acres). For trees, measure at DBH which is the height of an adult’s breast, which is generally defined as a height of 4.5 feet above ground. The trunk diameter can then be calculated by dividing the circumference of the trunk by 3.142. Example: 25” circumference / 3.142 = 8” diameter. For shrubs, measure the size of the shrub crown, which is calculated by using the formula (length X width X height in feet). When measuring crown volume, include only significant branches. Do not include stems or the trunk in the volume calculations if it is not within the crown itself. To control the growth of trees and shrubs, mix one part Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator to 11 parts water. Mix 10.7 fl oz (317 mL) of product with water to make one gallon of diluted mixture. One gallon of Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator will make 12 gallons of diluted mixture. Application rates for trees from 1.5 to 3.9 inches in DBH should be reduced by 50% for use rates of 0.75 - 2.5 grams per inch and by 25% for use rates of 2.75 - 4.0 grams per inch DBH.
- Step 2: Fill your sprayer halfway with water, add measured amount of Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator, then pour in remaining half of water. Stir the product in the tank until it is well-mixed.
- Step 3: Apply the Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator mixture as a basal drench or by soil injection. Prior to drench application for trees, make a 2 - 5” deep furrow around the base of the tree near the point of contact between the soil and the tree trunk (Figure 1). Apply the required dose as identified in Table 1 and Table 2 on the product label. Carefully pour the diluted mixture of Shortstop® 2SC into the furrow with a graduated container/jug or with a handheld hose connected to a truck-mounted tank/hydraulic sprayer. To avoid possible product runoff after applying, refill the furrow with untreated soil. For tree soil injections, inject the diluted mixture of product into the root zone, approximately 6 inches deep. Use soil injection equipment capable of delivery at 100 to 200 psi. Position the injection sites to release the product diluted mixture as close as possible to the point of contact between soil and unthickened bark beneath the soil so that the active ingredient may be readily absorbed by the tree (Figure 2). Locate injection sites next to buttress roots. For trees less than 6 inches DBH, use at least 4 evenly spaced injection sites per tree. For shrub drench applications, dig a shallow furrow 2 - 6 inches deep around the base of the tree near the point of contact between the soil and the tree trunk (Figure 1) prior to application. Carefully pour the diluted mixture of product evenly around the shrub into the furrow, then refill furrow with untreated soil.
Where to Use
Use Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator on trees and shrubs in areas such as utility rights-of-way, urban environments, residential areas, parks, commercial and other non-crop areas.
Do not treat nut or fruit trees that will be harvested within one year.
When to Use
Applications of Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator can be made throughout the year when trees and shrubs have full vegetation, weather permitting, except when soil is either saturated with water or frozen.
If applications of this product, are made after fall leaf drop, uptake will not occur until development of new leaves in the spring and resumption of transpiration.
Do not treat trees which are severely stressed due to moisture, temperature, low soil fertility, or exhibit mechanical or chemical injury.
Safety Information
Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.
Do not allow children or pets to enter treated areas until 24 hours have passed after application.
Special Considerations
Basal drench and soil injection application of Shortstop 2SC Plant Growth Regulator may result in localized, temporary discoloration of turfgrass immediately adjacent to the treatment site.
