SFM Extra is manufactured by Alligare and is a pre-emergent and post-emergent granular herbicide that uses the active ingredients sulfometuron methyl and metsulfuron methyl. It is mixed with water and used as a spray or used to impregnate granulated fertilizer to keep non-cropland areas clear of broadleaf weeds, various types of wood plants, and vines. SFM Extra can also provide selective weed control in specific unimproved turf grasses on these sites as well. SFM Extra is ideal for weed control along railroads, highways and on conifer tree sites.

Tools Needed

To apply SFM Extra, a professional skid sprayer is needed. A shield for the boom or individual nozzles can be used to keep spray drift to a minimum.

How to Use

  • Step 1: Determine how much SFM Extra you need your your application but first calculating the acreage of the area you wish to treat. You can do this be measuring (in feet) the length and width of the target area and multiplying the two values to get the square footage, then divide by 43,560 to get acres (length x width = square footage /43,560 = acreage). Depeneding on the weeds you are looking to control, you will need to mix between 2 to 5.33 oz. per acre in a minimum of 100 gallons of water per acre. For example, to treat common ragweed, the rate is 2.66 to 3 oz. per acre.
  • Step 2: Fill the spray tank with half of the required amount of water and begin the agitation process. Then, add the required amount of SFM Extra to the spray tank based on the target weed to control and your calculations. It is recommended to add a non-ionic surfactant to the mixture at a rate of 1 quart per 100 gallons of spray solution. Agitate until the solution is well-mixed.
  • Step 3:Apply the product uniformly, preferably via fan spray setting directly to target weeds. spray to wet but not to the point of runoff.

Where to Use

When to Use

The best times to apply SFM Extra is ultimately determined by the vegetation being controlled. For best results, apply SFM Extra before the root system of targeted vegetation becomes established. When applied at the rate listed on the label, allow at least 30 days in between applications and do not apply more than 8 times a year.

Do no apply SFM Extra during windy weather conditions, to prevent the product from drifting to non-targeted vegetation. Do not apply more than 10.67 ounces of SFM Extra per year per acre.

*****
I've been pulling crabgrass for two years in my ornamental peanut ground cover. I used this product and the crabgrass as well as the jew weed is dying. I applied another application two weeks later. I don't see any new sprouts and the above-mentioned weeds are continuing to die. I am thrilled. Product did not hurt the ground cover.

Killed Johnson grass
It is killing the johnson grass in my pasture that was getting out of control. It did kill some of the other grasses as well, but none that were very nutritious to cattle though.
