Primo Maxx Plant Growth Regulator
Primo Maxx Plant Growth Regulator is a professional-grade plant growth regulator designed to improve turf quality, reduce mowing frequency, and enhance root development while increasing turfgrass tolerance to environmental stresses like drought and heat.
01/10/26
Primo Maxx Plant Growth Regulator, manufactured by Syngenta, is an essential tool for turfgrass professionals who want to maximize turf health, reduce maintenance, and prepare grass for tough conditions.
It contains the active ingredient trinexapac-ethyl, a highly effective compound that slows vertical shoot growth in turfgrass. By limiting cell elongation, the product reduces mowing frequency while enhancing turfgrass density, color, and stress tolerance.
From lowering the mowing frequency to improving drought tolerance, Primo Maxx Plant Growth Regulator stands out as a versatile, powerful, and reliable growth regulator that supports beautiful, durable, and healthy turf. Whether you're maintaining a pristine golf course, a professional sports field, or a residential lawn, Primo Maxx offers unmatched turf quality and performance.
Tools Needed
It can be applied with backpack sprayers, hand sprayers, boom sprayers, and spray gun application devices.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Primo Maxx Plant Growth Regulator to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. Find the square footage by measuring the treatment area's length and width in feet, then multiply them together (length X width = square footage). For residential and commercial turf, apply 0.10 to 1.0 fl. oz. of Primo Maxx Plant Growth Regulator per 0.5 to 4.0 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft., depending on the turf type. For golf course fairways, use 0.50 fl. oz. of product per 0.5 to 4.0 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft. For golf course greens, apply 0.20 fl. oz. of product per 0.5 to 4.0 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft. Refer to the product label for specific rates and restrictions.
- Step 2: Fill the spray tank with half the amount of water, add the proper amount of product, then pour in the remaining half of the water. Close the spray tank and shake until the solution is well mixed.
- Step 3: Spray the top and bottom of turf leaves until wet, but not to the point of runoff. Repeat applications of Primo Maxx may be made as soon as the turf resumes growth or more suppression is desired.
Where to Use
Primo Maxx Plant Growth Regulator can be used for warm-seasoned and cool-seasoned turf in areas such as residential and commercial lawns, golf courses, sod farms, sports fields, cemeteries, and similar areas.
When to Use
Start applications in early spring, when turf begins active growth. Continue at regular intervals (7–14 days) during the growing season. Avoid applying during dormancy or immediately after scalping.
Safety Information
Primo Maxx Plant Growth Regulator is safe for people and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.
Keep people and pets out of the treated area until the spray has dried.
Special Considerations
Generally, Primo Maxx provides more suppression when turfgrasses are maintained at lower mowing heights than higher mowing heights. Application rates have been selected for typical mowing heights. The application rate may need to be adjusted depending on actual mowing conditions. To minimize possible turf injury, apply Primo Maxx, then wait at least 4 hours before mowing or mow first, wait at least 1 hour, then apply this product.
Watering-in is not necessary for activation.

| Keith's Pro Tip | "To care for turf, water deeply and infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings to promote strong root growth." |
| Time to Kill | The rates presented in the Application Rate Table provide approximately 50% growth inhibition over a 4-week period with little or no discoloration of turf growing under favorable conditions. If applications of Primo MAXX are made on a weekly or biweekly basis, reduce the lowest rate in the table by at least 50% for the first application and monitor the turf growth to adjust application rate for the desired growth suppression |
