Monterey Nutra-Gel Fertilizer and Water Retainer 12-13-9, manufactured by Monterey, is an effective dual-purpose fertilizer that promotes healthy plant growth in hanging baskets and containers while also reducing the need for watering. 

This granule fertilizer and water retainer combination gradually releases water back into the soil, helping plants stay hydrated for longer periods of time, even during drought conditions. The fertilizer component of this product gives the foliage a steady supply of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, resulting in better blooming. 

Monterey Nutra-Gel Fertilizer and Water Retainer 12-13-9 encourages leaf development and better coloration in container plants. Not only does it nourish basket and container plants, but the water-retaining gel helps these foliage survive periods of drought by storing up to 200 times its own weight. As a result, this reduces water stress and better retains water in the limited space of containers until the next watering. 

Tools Needed

It will need to be applied with a tablespoon or teaspoon, and it cannot be reused for food purposes or any other applications other than chemicals. 

You may also need a pencil to make holes around established plants gently. 

How to Use

• Step 1: Determine the size of your plant container to determine how much Monterey Nutra-Gel to use. Measure the diameter, depth, and length of the pot container, depending on its shape. Then, measure the opening across the top of the plant container. For a pony back, use 1-2 pinches of Monterey Nutra-Gel Fertilizer and Water Retainer 12-13-9. For a 1 gallon container, use 2 tsp. of product. For a 5 gallon container, apply 2 1/2 tbs. of product. Mix 2 tablespoons of product into 2 cubic feet of potting soil. For garden use, sprinkle 2 to 4 Tablespoons per 10 ft. area. Refer to the product label for specific application rates and restrictions.
• Step 2: For potting and transplanting purposes, mix the suggested amount evenly in the soil. Place plants in soil. Water thoroughly after planting for gel to absorb water.
• Step 3: To treat established plants, use a pencil to make three or more holes around the plant near the roots. Divide the suggested amount into holes. Water thoroughly after planting for gel to absorb water.
