Triclopyr 3 Herbicide
09/13/25
Triclopyr 3 Herbicide, manufactured by Alligare, is a non-selective, post-emergent herbicide that controls unwanted woody plants and perennial broadleaf weeds on various land areas. This emulsifiable concentrate formulation also controls aquatic plants in different water bodies.
It is ideal for use around industrial buildings, fence lines, and roadways, keeping woody plants and other weeds from taking over.
Triclopyr 3 Herbicide travels through the leafy tissue of the plant and works down to the root system for long-term control. It is compatible with surfactants and other herbicides for maximum results.
Tools Needed
To apply Triclopyr 3, a backpack sprayer, handheld pump sprayer, or professional skid sprayer is needed. For small applications, we recommend using a handheld pump sprayer or backpack sprayer.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Triclopyr 3 Herbicide to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. To do this, measure the length and width of the treatment area in feet, then multiply them together (length X width = square footage). General applications for Christmas tree plantations will use 3 to 4 pints of Triclopyr 3 Herbicide per acre. Refer to the label for specific application rates and restrictions.
- Step 2: If needed, add the correct amount of thickening agent and additional herbicide.
- Step 3: Add the correct amount of Alligare Triclopyr 3 and, if needed, the correct amount of surfactant.
- Step 4: Fill the spray tank with the rest of the required amount of water and keep the tank moderately agitated while making applications on desired areas.
Where to Use
Spray mixes of Triclopyr 3 can be applied to forest areas, industrial and non-crop lands, manufacturing sites, storage facilities, rights-of-way for power lines, communication lines, pipelines, roads, and railroads. It can be applied to fence lines, non-irrigation ditch banks, around farm building structures, Christmas tree farms, wetland areas in production forests, and industrial non-cropland areas. It can also be used in bodies of water such as ponds, lakes, reservoirs, non-irrigation canals, and ditches with little to no continuous outflow.
Triclopyr 3 cannot be applied to turf, residential lawns, other areas with desirable vegetation, or saltwater that flows into the ocean.
When to Use
Triclopyr 3 is best used after unwanted vegetation has grown enough to have plenty of foliage for the solution to stick to when applied. When using Triclopyr 3 as an aquatic herbicide, treat 1/3 to 1/2 of the water area and then 2 weeks later treat the other half.
Safety Information
Triclopyr 3 Herbicide is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.
Special Considerations
When using Triclopyr 3 as an aquatic herbicide, do not treat the entire body of water in one application. This could deplete the oxygen levels in the water, causing fish to die of suffocation. Contact the local State agency for fish and game before applying Triclopyr 3 to public water systems.

Keith's Pro Tips | "When applying Triclopyr 3 as an aquatic herbicide, start treating the shoreline and move out towards the middle of the body of water in bands. This will allow the fish to swim to untreated areas. Only treat 1/2 to 1/3 of the body water in one application. Within 10 to 14 days, treat the other areas. This will prevent depleting too much vegetation at once, causing the fish to die." |
Product Drawbacks | Triclopyr 3 is not suitable for use on turfs or lawns as it is a non-selective herbicide. To control weeds on turfs and lawns we recommend using products like TopShot Weed Killer or MSM Turf. |
Target Pests | Triclopyr 3 controls the following woody plants: alder, ash, aspen, kudzu, dogwood, cottonwood, oaks, pine, poison ivy, poplar, sumac, sweet gum, and more.
