Cutrine Plus Algaecide
Cutrine Plus is a copper-based algaecide and herbicide that can be applied to various water bodies to control filamentous and planktonic algae. It also controls the hydrilla plant and is safe for swimming and livestock.
09/12/25
Cutrine Plus Algaecide, manufactured by Applied Bio Chemists, is an effective double-chelated algaecide formula that controls algae and hydrilla water plants on the top of water in large bodies of water like lakes. This product is not confused with its granular form, Cutrine Plus Granular Algaecide, which is more effective against submerged algae and aquatic weeds in smaller application sites.
With its double-chelated formula, this liquid algaecide prevents the precipitation of copper with carbonates and bicarbonates in water. In short, this product moves more easily in water with a high mineral content.
Cutrine Plus Algaecide provides fast results on most hard-to-kill algae or algae mixed with aquatic plants in as little as 1 to 2 days after application. This easy-to-use algaecide allows swimming, fishing, livestock watering, or irrigating plants after treatment.
Tools Needed
You will need a backpack sprayer, handheld pump sprayer, professional skid sprayer, chemigation equipment, or drop hoses to make applications.
For general-purpose applications, we recommend using a backpack or handheld pump sprayer. A boat can also cover areas in the middle of the water body.
How to Use
- Step 1: Identify the type of algae to determine the copper concentrate needed for maximum results. This will help determine the amount of Cutrine Plus Algaecide that is required per acre per foot of water. To calculate acre-feet, measure the length, width, and average depths of the body of water within the area being treated. Then, follow the formula on the label to determine the acre-feet (Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Average Depth (ft) / 43,560 = Acre-feet). For typical algae applications, 1 gallon of Cutrine Plus Algaecide can treat 1.5 acre-feet of water. So, if you have a 6-acre pond, you would need 4 gallons of Cutrine Plus Algaecide.
- Step 2: Dilute the required amount of Cutrine Plus Algaecide with the right amount of water to ensure an even application is distributed. For small backpack sprayer applications, use a 9:1 dilution ratio (1 gallon of Cutrine Plus Algaecide to 9 gallons of water) or a 50:1 dilution ratio when using water pump equipment or large tank sprayers.
- Step 3: Apply Cutrine Plus Algaecide directly on the surface of the water, preferably on a fan nozzle spray setting for uniform coverage. Break up any large pieces of floating algae with a high-pressure sprayer if one is used. It is recommended to treat only 1/3 to 1/2 of the body of water to prevent harming fish, as removing the algae can deplete the oxygen source. Do not enter water bodies until the application process is finished.
Where to Use
Cutrine Plus Algaecide can be applied to lakes, potable water reservoirs, ponds (Farm, Fire, Fish, Golf Course, Irrigation, Ornamental, stormwater Retention, Swimming), industrial ponds, wastewater, fish hatcheries and raceways, aquaculture Facilities, and crop and non-crop irrigation conveyance systems (ditches, canals, and laterals).
Do not apply more than 1.0 parts per million to areas used for drinking water.
When to Use
Cutrine Plus Algaecide can be used when algae or hydrilla plants are growing or as a preventive treatment in labeled water sites.
Apply Cutrine Plus Algaecide when the weather is calm and sunny, and the water temperature is at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit. No more than half of the water body may be treated at one time. If a reapplication is needed, it must wait until 14 days since the last application.
In ponds (farm, fire, fish, golf course, irrigation, ornamental, stormwater retention, swimming), small lakes, fish hatcheries, and aquaculture facilities, treatment with this product should be started when visible, actively growing algae and susceptible plants appear in spring, preferably before significant surface accumulations occur.
Safety Information
Cutrine Plus Algaecide is safe around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing or applying this product.
Do not use in waters containing Koi and hybrid goldfish. It is not intended for use in small-volume garden pond systems.
Waters treated with this product may be hazardous to aquatic organisms. Treatment of aquatic weeds and algae can result in oxygen loss from the decomposition of dead algae and weeds, which can cause fish and invertebrate suffocation. Do not treat more than half of the water body to minimize hazards to avoid oxygen depletion due to decaying vegetation.
Special Considerations
Waters treated with Cutrine Plus Algaecide may be used for swimming, fishing, further potable water treatment, livestock watering, or irrigating turf, ornamental plants, or crops after treatment.
Some states may require permits to apply this product to public waters. Check with your local authorities.
