  • Step 3:Maintain an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for at least 10 days or until signs of rat activity cease.

It might be too good at its job.
While Contrax does seem to have killed our rats quickly and completely ( or at least I think so since we have not seen any rats since we have been putting it out,) we unfortunately also have fewer squirrels . It looks as if the poison in Contrax is just to attractive to squirrels for them to resist . But in the good column, our city vector control officer has told us that squirrels are a worse spreader of plague than rats, so we do feel a bit safer from the plague than before - still we do miss our pet squirrels and all their friends. Their tiny squirrel faces panting and gasping for life terrorize all my sleeping hours; their bloated half eaten bodies zombie about in my nightmares nightly; and their adorable babies motionlessly starving to death in their nests waiting for mom and dad to come home with dinner can not be scoured from my guilt ridden consciences . But on the other hand I don't have to care because I am a proud white American male - we get to do whatever we want because god said we white guys are not required to be fair or kind or even constructive. Oh its good to be superior and know it. But I do wonder if the deaths of our neighborhood kids, dogs and cats, a few stiff grandparents , and a flock or two of birds just might be related to the demise of our rats. I do find myself wondering if worrying is really worth the effort - after all nothing lives for ever, right? In any case the rats are gone - or at least for now; and as for the rest, I just don't have the time to deal, cause I'M GOING TO DISNEYLAND!

Finally got ahead in this game.
We have a old stone house out in the country and we are only there 5 or 6 weekends/year. In the past, the place was overrun with mice every time we went. I started putting out plenty of these blocks and they eat 'em up, but we hardly ever see mouse droppings or signs of nests anymore. So they tend to eat and leave. We started this seven years ago and after a year we could tell we were winning. I take a 12" x 12" piece of plywood, drive 4 or 5 long nails through from the bottom, put two blocks on each nail. When I come back, I just throw away the left-overs and put new blocks on the nails. No problems yet.
