Sonar Genesis
Sonar Genesis
Sonar Genesis is developed by Sepro Corporation and is a selective systemic aquatic herbicide that contains Fluridone as the active ingredient. Sonar Genesis is used for controlling various types of weeds growing in freshwater areas like ponds, lakes, drainage canals, and more. Use Sonar to get rid of submerged plants like bladderwort, fanwort, and water milfoil, emersed plants like water-lily, and floating plants like duckweed. For a cost-effective way to eliminate these weeds, we highly recommend Sonar Genesis.
Tools Needed
To apply Sonar Genesis a skid sprayer, backpack sprayer, or pump sprayer is needed. We suggest using weighted trailing hoses to make underwater applications for submerged vegetation.
How to Use
- Step 1: Identify the types of weeds that require treatment to be sure Sonar will be effective in killing them. Then determine how much Sonar Genesis you need to treat, you will need to measure and calculate the treatment sites surface acre x average water depth in feet x desired ppb. (parts per billion) of Sonar x 0.0054. For example, if your pond's surface area is 1 acre and 5 foot deep and you want to use the 30 ppb. concentration of Sonar Genesis, multiply all of that by 0.0054 and you will get 0.81 gallons per treated surface acre. Check the label for details.
- Step 2: Fill the spray tank 1/2 to 3/4 of the way with water. then input the appropriate amount of Sonar based on your calculations. Shake the Sonar Genesis container well and then add the correct amount of Fluridone with parts per billion (ppb) to the average depth rate to the tank and continue the agitation process during applications.
- Step 3: Apply the mixture to the surface making sure you apply it evenly to your waterbody using a fan spray setting.
Where to Use
Sonar Genesis can be used on lakes, ponds, irrigation canals, drainage ditches, reservoirs, potable water sources, and other freshwater areas. Do not apply to saltwater or brackish water areas. With the proper hoses and equipment, it can be applied to vegetation that grows on the bottom of the body of water.
When to Use
Sonar Genesis can be applied by licensed professionals in states that require the proper documentation or applied by DIY homeowners with ponds and other forms of freshwater bodies on the property. Read the product label carefully to not exceed the parts per billion (ppb) per annual growth cycle. For best results, apply Sonar prior to weed growth or when weeds are young.
Safety Information
Sonar Genesis is safe to use around children, pets, and livestock when applied according to the product label. Always wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing or applying the product.
Special Considerations
Sonar Genesis has a list of water plants that it will control, a list it will partially control and a list it will not control at all. It is important to read the product label and know the type of plants needing to be controlled before making applications.

Keith's Pro Tips | "Timing is important when spraying Sonar Genesis to control weeds. If the target aquatic weed is mature, it may require a higher application rate and more time to achieve control." |
Product Drawbacks | Protect may need to be regularly agitated during application so it remains mixed. |
Target Pests | Sonar Genesis is labeled for use on the following: Alligatorweed, American Eelgrass Tapegrass, American Lotus, Barnyardgrass, Bladderwort, Brazilian Elodea Egeria, Cabomba Fanwort, Cattail, Common Coontail, Common Duckweed, Common Elodea, Common Watermeal, Creeping Waterprimrose, Giant cutgrass, Hydrilla, Illinois Pondweed, Limnophila, Naiad, Parrotfeather, Pondweed, Reed Canarygrass, Salvinia, Smartweed, Southern Watergrass, Spatterdock, Spikerush, Torpedograss, Water-lily, Watermilfoil, Waterpurslane, and Watershield. |
