Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide, manufactured by PBI Gordon, is a post-emergent selective herbicide meant to control annual and perennial grassy weeds that show up on landscape beds. Ornamec 170 works systemically to control unwanted grasses in areas with ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, flowers and groundcover.

Ornamec 170 can be safely applied "over-the-top" without injuring desired plants. Ornamec works fast and will hinder the growth of grassy weeds in as quick as 48 hours. If you are looking for grassy weed control, Ornamec provides great value.

Tools Needed

To use Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide, you will need to mix the product into a sprayer of your choosing such as a backpack, hose-end or hand-pump sprayer. For the average job, a hand-pump gallon sprayer works best.

How to Use

Pump sprayer treatment

  • Step 1: Determine how much Ornamec 170 you need for your application by first calculating the square footage of your yard. To do this, you will need to measure and multiply the area length times the width (length x width=square footage). The application rates for Ornamec 170 vary depending on the weed being treated, where you are treating and whether you are conducting a broadcast treatment or spot treatment. For example, Broadcast treatments for Ornamentals, Trees, Shrubs and Groundcovers use 6 to 9 fl. oz. per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft. Spot treatments for Bermudagrass on Tall Fescue Turf should be applied at a rate of 2 fl. oz. per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft.
  • Step 2: Fill your sprayer tank halfway with the appropriate amount of water. Add the correct measured amount of Ornamec 170 based on your calculations and then add the remaining half of water. Agitate well in the sprayer to ensure it's well mixed.
  • Step 3: Broadcast spray or spot treat based on the severity of your grassy weed problem, making sure to get even coverage via fan spray setting.
  • Step 3: Reapply the product in 14 to 21 days intervals if weeds are still persisting and repeat as needed for full control all season long.

Where to Use

Ornamec 170 can be used to control grass weeds in many newly transplanted and established ornamentals, trees, shrubs and groundcovers.

When to Use

Apply Ornamec 170 to actively growing grass weeds before they exceed the recommended growth stages. Make applications on warm, calm days when wind speeds are low to minimize drift and when rain is not in the immediate forecast.

Do not apply this product if rainfall is expected within 1 hour of application.

Safety Information

Ornamec 170 is safe for pets and children when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.

Keep children and pets out of treated areas until the spray has completely dried.

Special Considerations

Do not apply Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide to grasses that are stressed due to moisture, temperature, low soil fertility or mechanical/chemical injury. Always check the label before purchasing to make sure that the product is listed to address your specific weed problem and to check if it is safe to use on your landscape.

Killing Bermuda Grass in my Fescue Lawn
This product is the best I have found to kill Bermuda grass which has grown in with my Fescue Grass. It does take several applications as the Bermuda Grass roots creep under the ground and I have to spray the new shoots of Bermuda Grass where they pop up, but requires only 1 or 2 applications if Bermuda grass is growing mostly by itself so most of the plant can be sprayed. The product does not hurt my Fescue grass if I follow the directions.

works well
works on killing burmuds grass. The burmuda grass has to look green before you spray. You will see results in about 8 or 9 days

Great results so far.
I used a gallon of mixed product on about 250 sq feet. This is about double the recommended dose. Results look good after two weeks. Bermuda grass appears to be dead!!! I have tried various products over the last ten years and also digging up the area to no success.

Great product!
Great priduct! It worked very well. I had a very thick infestation of Bermuda grass I'd been trying to get rid of for several years. Nothing I'd tried previously killed it.
I'm very happy with this product and definitely reccomend it.

Not very effective for crabgrass
Works very well on Goosegrass and Dallisgrass. Works moderately well on wild Bermuda grass. Results are very slow, over several weeks. I have not had a good result against crabgrass.

Seems to be killing the Bermuda grass
So far so good. It works better than any similar products I have tried. It's too soon to know if the Bermuda grass will eventually grow back.

Great stuff..
I had bought a house that was mostly bermuda and weeds. Was looking something to spry without killing what little fescue was there. After spraying I found out there was no fescue. This stuff knocked the life out of everything else. May not have to respray. If I do i'll know what to use.

  5. Q:If I use this in my raised beds, is it going to kill the Bermuda grass right down to the roots? Or, will I have to continue doing this forever?
    8/2/23
A:Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide is a selective herbicide, meaning it will travel down into Bermudagrass all the way to the roots for effective elimination. Repeat applications at 30-day intervals throughout the summer until fall to continue the growth suppression of bermudagrass. Complete control may take 1 to 2 growing seasons. However, it is not labeled to be used in raised beds.
