Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide
Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide is a post-emergent selective herbicide that is designed to treat various types of grassy weed problems. It can control barnyard grass, goosegrass, crabgrass, foxtail, and other listed weeds.
09/20/25
Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide, manufactured by PBI Gordon, is a post-emergent selective herbicide that controls annual and perennial grassy weeds on landscape beds. It works systemically to control unwanted grasses in areas with ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, and ground cover.
Ornamec 170 can be safely applied "over the top" without injuring desired plants. It works fast and will hinder the growth of grassy weeds in as little as 48 hours. If you are looking for grassy weed control, Ornamec provides excellent value.
Tools Needed
You will need to mix the product into a sprayer of your choosing, such as a backpack, hose-end, or hand-pump sprayer. For the average job, a hand-pump gallon sprayer works best.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Ornamec 170 to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. To do this, measure the length and width of the treatment area in feet and then multiply them together (length x width = square footage). The application rates for Ornamec 170 vary depending on the weed being treated, where you are treating it, and whether you are conducting a broadcast treatment or spot treatment. For example, broadcast treatments for ornamentals, trees, shrubs, and groundcovers use 6 to 9 fl. oz. of Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft. Spot treatments for bermudagrass on tall fescue turf should be applied at a rate of 2 fl. oz. of product per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft. Refer to the label for specific application rates and restrictions.
- Step 2: Fill your sprayer tank halfway with the appropriate water level. Based on your calculations, add the correct measured amount of Ornamec 170 and the remaining half of the water. Agitate well in the sprayer to ensure it's well mixed.
- Step 3: Broadcast spray or spot treat based on the severity of your grassy weed problem, using the fan spray setting to ensure even coverage.
- Step 3: Reapply the product in 14 to 21-day intervals if weeds persist and repeat as needed for complete control all season long.
Where to Use
Ornamec 170 can control grass weeds in many newly transplanted and established ornamentals, trees, shrubs, and groundcovers.
When to Use
Apply to actively grow grass weeds before they exceed the recommended growth stages. Make applications on warm, calm days when wind speeds are low to minimize drift and when rain is not in the immediate forecast.
Do not apply this product if rainfall is expected within 1 hour of application.
Safety Information
Ornamec 170 is safe to use around pets and people when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.
Keep children and pets out of treated areas until the spray completely dries.
Special Considerations
Do not apply Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide to grasses that are stressed due to moisture, temperature, low soil fertility, or mechanical/chemical injury. Always check the label before purchasing to ensure the product is listed to address your specific weed problem and if it is safe to use on your landscape.
