Martin's Stump Killer
Martin's Stump Killer is a powerful, long-lasting herbicide that controls unwanted trees through cut surface applications and prevents the sprouting of cut trees for up to two years.
09/15/25
Martin's Stump Killer, manufactured by CSI, is an effective water-soluble herbicide that manages and eliminates undesired trees and new tree growth in forest and non-crop sites.
As a two-in-one product, Martin's Stump Killer includes a blue dye that allows the applicator to readily view and mark the area during application. Once a cut surface has been treated, the product will continue to control the growth for up to two years.
Martin's Stump Killer is a ready-to-use herbicide, and to such an extent, applications easily seep into the cut surfaces of tree stumps to provide complete plant growth control.
Tools Needed
Apply with a handheld pump sprayer or disposable paintbrush. Prior to application, cut the tree down to a stump with a chainsaw or axe.
If used as a tree injection, you will need to use a tree injector, such as a Hypohatchet injector or a similar device.
How to Use
- Step 1: Cut down the tree to a small stump and branches until they are stubs. Determine how much Martin's Stump Killer to use by calculating the size of the treatment site. To find this, measure the length and width of the treatment area in feet and multiply (length X width = square footage). For acreage, divide the square footage by one acre (square footage / 43,560 = acre). The application rate for tree injections is to apply 1 millimeter of undiluted Martin's Stump Killer solution through the bark completely around the tree trunk at 2 to 3-inch intervals between the edges of the injector wounds. Make injections 2 to 4 feet above the ground. For stump treatments with a paintbrush or spray application equipment, use 4 gallons of product per acre.
- Step 2: Adjust the spray nozzle to a low-pressure spray. Spray until the cut surface of the tree stump and stubs is wet but not to the point of run-off. Avoid applications within the root zone of desirable trees. Thoroughly wet the cambium area next to the bark.
- Step 3: Do not apply more than 4 gallons of Martin's Stump Killer per acre for two years. Do not make more than one application every two years. On right-of-way and other non-crop areas, no more than 4 gallons of product per acre is applied per year. Do not make more than one application per year.
Where to Use
Use Martin's Stump Killer on cut trees and branches in forests and non-cropland areas such as fencerows, roadsides, right-of-way, and other sites.
Do not apply on residential or commercial lawns or near ornamental trees and shrubs.
When to Use
It can be used at any point of the season as long as the ground is not frozen or covered by snow. Maple tree species should not be treated during the spring sap flow.
Safety Information
Martin's Stump Killer is safe to use around children or pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling or applying this product.
Do not enter or allow others to enter treated areas until sprays have dried.

Small amounts of Martin's Stump Killer can cause injury to plants. This product should not be applied near sensitive crops or desirable broadleaf plants.
