Hornet WDG Herbicide
Hornet WDG Herbicide
Hornet WDG Herbicide, manufactured by DOW/CORTEVA, is a water dispersible granule that provides two modes of action herbicides to completely control new and germinating weed growth in tolerant field corn.
This herbicide provides flexibility as a product that can be paired with another and used as a preplant surface, preplant incorporated, or a preemergence treatment. Offering excellent crop safety, and the versatility of a wide window of application as this product can be used until corn reaches a height of 20 inches or V6 growth stage.
Hornet WDG Herbicide provides the most experienced or beginner grower to combat broadleaf weeds like cocklebur or sunflowers with one convenient application.
Tools Needed
Hornet WDG Herbicide can be applied with a hose sprayer, handheld pump sprayer, or backpack sprayer.
You may add spray adjuvants such as non-ionic surfactants, crop oil concentrates, methylated seed oil, urea ammonium nitrate, or ammonium sulfate.
How to Use
- Step 1: Do not open the water soluble packages. Determine how much Hornet WDG Herbicide to use by calculating the square footage of the treatment area. To do this, multiply the areas length by its width in feet (length X width = square footage). When treating large areas such as acres, take the square footage and divide it by one acre (square footage / 43,560 = acre). Apply between 2.0 to 5.0 oz. of Hornet WDG Herbicide per 10 to 60 gallons of water per acre. Do not exceed a total application rate of 6.0 oz. of Hornet WDG Herbicide per acre in a single crop year.
- Step 2: Fill the sprayer tank with half the amount of water, then add the required amount of Hornet WDG Herbicide (leave the packets unopened). Water soluble packets will float on the the water surface until the water soluble film dissolves and releases the product. Pour in the remaining half of water and agitate the tank until product disperses in the spray tank solution. Spray adjuvants required for post-emergent foliar applications should be added to the spray tank last.
- Step 3: Make sure packets have completely dissolved and the product is thoroughly mixed with water before spraying. Avoid spraying the corn by adjusting the nozzle to a low-pressure setting and spray from a low height to coat the top and bottom of emerged weeds. To treat soil for preplant and preemergence control, treat the top 2 to 3 inches of the final seedbed. Irrigate the treated areas with sufficient water to moisten the soil to a depth of 2 inches within 7 to 10 days after a surface applied treatment.
Where to Use
Use Hornet WDG Herbicide for field corn, including high oil and waxy varieties and field corn grown for ensilage.
When to Use
Hornet WDG Herbicide should be applied when corn is not stressed or damaged by conditions such as cold weather, hot weather greater than 90 degrees Fahrenheit, hail, drought, water saturated soil, disease, or insects may cause crop injury. For soil treatments, apply when soil pH is higher than 5.9 but beneath 7.8 as this may result in crop injury.
An interval of at least 85 days is required between applications of Hornet WDG Herbicide and field corn harvested for grain. If field corn is grown for forage or ensilage, application must occur before corn reaches 20 inches in height or V6 growth stage and an interval of at least 45 days is required between application and the harvest.
Do not foliar apply Hornet WDG Herbicide to corn that exhibits herbicide injury from previous applications made to the current or preceding crop.
Safety Information
Hornet WDG Herbicide is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.
Do not enter or allow children, pets, workers, or others into treated areas until 48 hours have passed after application.
Special Considerations
If any herbicides with ALS inhibition mode of action such as Pursuit, Preview, Canopy, Classic, Scepter, or Squadron herbicide, etc. was applied the previous year, apply Hornet WDG Herbicide to corn only if the rotational restrictions applicable to corn for the preceding product has been met.

Q:Do I need to make follow-up applications after the first treatment with Hornet WDG?2/9/22A:Follow-up applications are not necessary with Hornet WDG Herbicide. Multiple applications of Hornet WDG Herbicide within a growing season can be made as a soil application followed by a postemergence application, or as multiple postemergent applications as long as the cumulative rate of 0.07 lb. per active ingredient of flumetsulam is not exceeded.
