Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench
Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench
Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench, manufactured by VPG, Inc., is a systemic insecticide used to control a variety of insects like adelgids and aphids from destroying your outdoor trees, shrubs, listed fruit trees and nut trees.
When this suspended concentrate is applied to the soil surrounding the tree or shrub, it will absorb into the shrub/trees roots becoming a part of the plants system. Once absorbed into the soil, Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench will help to protect current trees or shrubs for up to a year against pests, but also spread to new plants beginning to grow.
Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench is an easy to use insecticide that readily dissolves in water to fight against pests without being washed off by rain or water.
Tools Needed
To apply Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench, you will need a handheld pump sprayer, backpack sprayer, bucket, or measuring utensil.
Bucket or measuring utensils should not be used for any food or drinking water purposes after use with this product.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine the size of the tree or shrub you intend to treat to determine how much Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench to use. To do this, measure the distance around the tree trunk or the height of the shrub. Measure distance in inches around the tree trunk at chest height. For every tree trunk inch you measure will be 1 fl. oz of product. If there are multiple tree trunks, add their tree trunks together, then multiple by 0.75. For example, if one tree trunk has four trunks and they measure 20, 5, 10, and 5 inches or a total of 40 inches (40 X .75 = 30 ounces of product to use). For shrubs, you will use 3 fl. oz. of product per foot of height.
- Step 2: To mix, fill your sprayer, bucket, or water can with 1 gallon of water, then agitate the measured amount of Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench before applying to water. If your tree exceeds 50 inches then use 2 gallons of water. Carefully pour the product into the required amount of water within your sprayer or other equipment. Agitate until spray mixture is evenly mixed.
- Step 3: Go to treatment area and slowly pour the solution around the trunk/main stem of the tree/shrub as close as possible.
- Step 4: Refill the sprayer, bucket, or watering can with clean water and pour it around the trunk as well.
Where to Use
Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench can be used on outdoor trees and shrubs, including certain types of fruit and nut trees such as apple, crabapple, pecan, loquat, mayhaw, quince, oriental pear, and pear.
Do not apply this product by any application method, to linden, basswood or other Tilia species in the State of Oregon.
When to Use
Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench can be used anytime of the year, preferably in the early fall before insect activity begins. Apply this product when the turf is not waterlogged or frozen for the product to move more easily into the plants roots. If there has been a prolonged dry period, you will want to water the tree or shrub the night before application.
Safety Information
Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.
Children and pets may re-enter the treated area after it has dried.

Q:Will work for ants on my palm trees?10/26/23A:I have used this product now for 3 years. I’m in Texas and apply to everything I have in the ground in March and I really don’t have to use any pesticides on anything the rest of the year. It’s been amazing for me. My plants thrive without the pests. I did call ferti-lome before I started using and told them everything I had in the ground to make sure I could use it. I don’t have palms so I would recommend calling them first but if you choose to use the 3 gallon is best price deal. Good luck

Q:Can you use tree and shrub drench more than once a year for scale?7/8/23A:Two part question. You can use this more than once a year. Regarding scale, I suggest you contact the manufacturer, I don't know. We use it for the infestation of bore beetles. Does it work? We've used it for at least 5 years now and it controls the beetle worms which harbor themselves in the middle of branches causing them to snap off. The frequency has diminished, but they're still present, so it works, it does not eradicate.

Q:Can this product be used on other outdoor perennial plants such as day lilies? If so, what concentration rate?4/2/23A:Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench can only be used on listed tree and shrub species, which day lilies are not considered. Supreme IT is a broad-spectrum insecticide that can be used on ornamentals. Depending on the pest, treat with 0.125 to 1.0 fl. oz. of Supreme I/T per gallon of water per 1,000 square feet or 5.4 to 43.5 fl. oz. per 100 gallons for ornamental applications. Before application to entire planting, test treat a small portion of the plant (NOT ENTIRE plant) and watch for signs of sensitivity for at least 14 days. Some plant species may be sensitive to the final spray solution. https://www.solutionsstores.com/reclaim-it-insecticide

Q:If my shrub is 6' tall, I would need to use a total of 18 oz of Tree Drench to 1 gallon of water, is that correct?4/2/22A:I’ve only used it on crepe myrtles and small trees so my mix was based on tree diameter. Based on the instruction sheet 18 oz is correct for a 6ft shrub. I expect how dense the scrub is might make some difference.

Q:Can I use it on my houseplants?3/2/22A:Since the first answer provided didnt actually answer your question and just reiterated the "intended" use of the product, I can say from experience that while yes, it is recommended to use outdoors on trees and shrubs because the product is able to spread out and down into an endless amount of soil and earth as needed unlike the same concentration being confined in a pot or container which actually results in a much higher concentration remaining in the small amount of soil surrounding your roots until the roots are able to absorb it in the original concentration instead of gradually dispersing throughout the surrounding soil in your garden where it is absorbed by the roots of other plants as well. Trees and shrubs can uptake a greater amount of the root drench safely because of the mass available for the product to travel through. What the tree doesn't uptake right away continues to spread out in the surrounding soil over the course of several waterings and is absorbed by other plants helping to reduce the concentration gradually and prevent phytotoxicity as the concentration is continuously reduced giving the intended plant access to what it needs without forcing it to absorb a toxic amount. I have used this successfully on my houseplants to eradicate a Thrips infestation last year. But I used a far lower concentration than recommended on the label. Take in to consideration that the amount you add to each pot will reman there until it absorbed by the roots or flushed out by hand when you water your plants. I do NOT recommend using this product if you water your plants from the bottom. Since it is a systemic treatment, I applied a much weaker concentration a day after a lighter than normal watering, and finished watering the rest of the way with this mixed into the water. I gave each plant about 1-2 weeks and closely monitored the response of each plant as well as the effect on the current thrips population. Treat again based off the results for each plant.

Q:I read the label instructions and it seems like the amount to use on shrubs is much greater than for trees. Is the required dosage really 3 ounces of Ferti Lome soil drench concentrate per foot of height for shrubs? That means a 5 ft tall shrub would require nearly a pint of the concentrate. That seems excessive and expensive.2/26/22A:As stated on page 4 of the product label, you will need to use 3 oz. of Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench per foot of height of shrub.

Q:Is Tree and shub drench good to use on sago palms that have scale?10/20/21A:Though not mentioned by name, a sago palm is considered an ornamental plant. Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Drench does eliminate scale from non-edible trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants.
