Tools Needed

You’ll need a few basic tools depending on the surface you’re working with. For solid surfaces like wood or metal, using screws and a drill is the most secure method.

On smoother surfaces such as concrete or stone where drilling isn’t ideal, a strong outdoor adhesive or glue works well to keep the spikes in place.

Cable ties are useful for attaching spikes to poles, fences, or railings. Additionally, measuring tape and a utility knife or scissors will help you cut the spikes to fit perfectly.

How to Use

• Step 1: Disinfect and clean all surface areas. Remove all debris including overhanging branches, leaves, nests, etc. Clean and disinfect area using hospital grade disinfectant. Allow the area to dry before installation. Due to infectious diseases associated with bird feces, use extreme care when removing nests and bird droppings.
• Step 2: For Concrete, Brick, Steel Attachments: Adhere bird spike strips using outdoor construction-grade adhesive. Run a bead of adhesive along the base of each bird spike strip. Press bird spike strip into place allowing the adhesive to mushroom-up through the screw holes for more effective adhesion. One caulking tube of adhesive will adhere approximately 25 ft. of bird spike strips
• Step 3: For Wood Attachments: Use wood screws to secure bird spike strips to wood surfaces. Following pre-drilled holes along the bird spike strip base, screw tightly into the end of each strip; place one wood screw at least every six inches along the strip base.
• Step 4: Tie Down Attachments: For pipes and other areas, secure bird spike strips with nylon ties by wrapping and securing the tie around the base of the bird spike strip.
• Step 5: To prevent birds from nesting behind the spike, leave no more than 1” gap between the wall and the bird spike strip. To prevent birds from sitting on the ledge, leave a minimum of 1/2” overhang between the tip of the bird spike and front/leading edge. For wide areas, multiple rows of bird spike strips may need to be installed. Install bird spike strips with 1” overlap.

When to Use

Late winter or early spring before nesting season is ideal. Birds are less likely to return to a site where they never nested in the first place.
