Aquashade Aquatic Herbicide is developed by Arch chemicals and is a pond dye and aquatic weed treatment. The product consists of a blend of blue and yellow dyes that work together specifically to screen or shade portions of the sunlight spectrum (red-orange and blue-violet) that are known to promote underwater weed and algae growth.

Simply pour the correct amount of Aquashade directly into the water at several different locations and let the product do the rest. In the end your pond or water body will look clean, clear and beautiful.

Applying Blue pond dye

Tools Needed

All you need to use Aquashade is a pair of safety gloves when applying to your water body. Aquashade can be poured directly from the container, but it is recommended to use a pouring device, such as a bucket or even a sprayer.

How to Use

  • Step 1: Measure the size and depth of body of water to determine how much Aquashade you need. To determine acre-feet volume, measure the lendth, width, and depth of the waterbody, and then divide by 43,560 (length x width x depth / 43,560 = acre-feet). Aquashade can be applied at various rates: 20 fl. oz., 32 fl. oz., 60 fl. oz., or 80 fl. oz. per acre-foot of water body volume.
  • Step 2: Pour the Aquashade over the edge directly into the body of water and the water's natural movement will disperse the dye in several hours.
  • Step 3: Additional applications will be needed at 1 to 4 week intervals as dyes are broken down by sunlight.

Where to Use

Aquashade can be used in lakes, ponds, water fountains, and lagoons.

When to Use

For best results, use Aquashade before or at the beginning of spring months to prevent algae and some unwanted underwater plant life from growing.

Safety Information

Aquashade is completely non-toxic and safe for humans and animals. When applied at the recommended rate, it will not stain or birds or fish. Once the dye is completely dispersed, irrigating, fishing, water sports, and other activities can continue.

Special Considerations

Aquashade may stain clothes and skin. Wear suitable protective clothing when applying Aquashade.

  5. Q:On the bottle label it says blue # 9 - 23.62 % and yellow #23 - 2.64 % but your product msds & label says #9 - 12.something and yellow 1.2 So what is correct I used to be able to buy the 23.62 with no 9 but they have reduced the strength. What is correct formula for this product?

  6. Q:I want to clear a fish stocked retention pool that has pond "scum" What product will be best for me? The shore line is very shallow. I'm not sure how deep the middle is, but all around the shore line and "scum" patches everywhere have formed.
    4/8/20
A:Aquashade is a great product to assist in keeping aquatic grasses from growing in ponds, as it diffuses ultraviolet light in the water (4 to 6 feet plus depths) to help keep the grasses from starting. As for pond "scum", hot weather and heat coupled with stagnant water creates pond scum and only water aerators will stop that. Auquashade does help reduce water temps but you need moving water to keep it clean, as it does in nature!

  7. Q:oops, my pond is 1/3 acre and approx 12 feet deep in the middle. I poured the entire gallon in. Will it hurt my fish?
    5/21/19
A:I’ve been using Aquashade for years and my first pond was similar in size. I would put in 1/2 to 1 gallon at a time and it will not harm fish, dogs, or swimmers. I just put it in late in the evening and keep everyone out until it spreads out. I don’t think it would hurt either way, that was just my way of doing it.

  8. Q:How many gallons of water does one gallon of this herbicide treat?
    3/25/18
A:Use 1 gallon of AQUASHADE Liquid to treat 4.00 acre-feet. 1 Gallon will work to cover an acre size pond with average depth of 4 feet.

  10. Q:There is a monumental pool that I am trying to cure the algae overgrowth in. This pool is strictly used as a decorative piece to the campus. (no aquatic life or occasional dips) My question is will this product do the trick for the job? Do I have to worry about the dye affecting the concrete walls? Do I need the pump going when pouring solution in?
    9/14/17
A:It will stain porous surfaces, but will control the algae growth. Measure out required amount of Aquashade into a pourable container or apply directly from the product container by pouring around shoreline water and/or in offshore areas from a boat. Aquashade will mix throughout the water on its own, however, more widespread application or aeration devices/fountains will provide quicker dispersion. Better options for your situation would be Cutrine Granules. https://www.solutionsstores.com/cutrine-plus-granular-algaecide
