Anderson's 21-22-4 Starter Fertilizer with Mesotrione
Anderson's 21-22-4 Starter Fertilizer with Mesotrione is a dual-purpose fertilizer and pre-emergent herbicide that promotes strong turf growth while preventing grassy and broadleaf weeds and crabgrass seedlings.
04/02/26
Anderson's 21-22-4 Starter Fertilizer with Mesotrione, manufactured by The Andersons, is an all-in-one granular fertilizer and pre-emergent herbicide that delivers high-quality nutrition and powerful pre-emergent control of grassy and broadleaf weeds, making it ideal for seeding, sodding, or overseeding new turf. Its homogenous, fine-particle formulation ensures even coverage, while patented controlled-release nitrogen supports continuous feeding and rapid lawn establishment.
With 22% phosphorus, this fertilizer promotes deep-root development, which is essential for drought tolerance, nutrient uptake, and long-term lawn success. If you’ve ever had a patchy lawn that just won’t thicken, weak roots may be the issue. The 21% nitrogen gives you the kickstart your seedlings need, but it’s not a fast-release surge that leads to excessive top growth. Instead, it supports steady green-up and thickening over time. Let’s face it: the fewer products you have to apply, the better. Combining weed control and fertilizer in one step saves time, labor, and money.
Anderson's 21-22-4 Starter Fertilizer with Mesotrione is a unique weed and feed starter fertilizer that controls grassy and broadleaf weeds in home lawns, recreational areas, golf courses and sod farms. By giving your new turf essential nutrients and stopping weeds, this product saves you weeks of frustration and delivers a lawn you can be proud of.
Tools Needed
You will need a push or broadcast spreader.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Anderson's 21-22-4 Starter Fertilizer with Mesotrione to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. Find the square footage by measuring the treatment area's length and width in feet, then multiplying them together (length X width = square footage). For acreage, take the square footage and divide it by one acre (square footage / 43,560 sq. ft. = acres). For a general application, use 4.3 lbs. of Anderson's 21-22-4 Starter Fertilizer with Mesotrione per 1,000 sq. ft. For broader applications, apply 187 lbs. of product per acre.
- Step 2: Calibrate the spreader to the proper setting then load the correct amount of granules.
- Step 3: Spread the granules evenly across the treatment area, but avoid skips and misses. Best results will be obtained if 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water is provided by rainfall or irrigation within three days of treatment. For extended control of listed weeds, a second application can be applied six weeks after the first application.
Where to Use
Anderson's 21-22-4 Starter Fertilizer with Mesotrione may be applied to home lawns, recreational areas, golf courses, and sod farms.
It may be used on newly seeded or over-seeded established plantings of the following grasses: Kentucky bluegrass, centipedegrass, tall fescue, fine fescue (creeping red, chewings, hard), and perennial ryegrass.
Do not use this product on flowers, shrubs, trees, fruit or vegetable plants. Cana, day lilies and irises are especially susceptible to injury.
Do not apply to Bentgrass, Bermudagrass (common), improved seeded Bermudagrass, Zoysiagrass, Dichondra, Kikuyugrass, Bahiagrass or Lippia lawns and turf.
When to Use
It may be used from spring to fall when seeding, sodding, sprigging, plugging, overseeding, or reseeding.
Avoid applications if rainfall is expected to occur within 48 hours of treatment.
Safety Information
Anderson's 21-22-4 Starter Fertilizer with Mesotrione is safe for people and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling and applying this product.
Do not allow people or pets to enter the treatment area until the application is complete and the grass is dry.
Special Considerations
Do not apply an organophosphate or carbamate insecticide within seven days of an application of this product as turf injury may occur.
For extended season-long control of crabgrass and foxtail, apply mesotrione in combination with a preemergence herbicide.
Avoid using on established turf if not seeding, as mesotrione can temporarily whiten existing grass. In general, symptoms appear five to seven days after application and may last up to 14 days. Discoloration is most likely to occur on ryegrass lawns and turf.
