Sandea Herbicide, manufactured by Gowan, is a selective post-emergent and pre-emergent herbicide that targets a broad spectrum of broadleaf weeds and nutsedges in a variety of fruit and vegetable crops, including turfgrass sod, fencerows, and other terrains.

The active ingredient, halosulfuron-methyl, is part of the sulfonylurea family which is known for its targeted, low-use-rate effectiveness. This active ingredient works by inhibiting acetolactate synthase (ALS), an essential enzyme in plant protein synthesis, causing targeted weeds to stop growing and die over time such as pigweed, shepherdspurse, and more.

Sandea Herbicide is a dual-action herbicide concentrate that gives easy control over tough broadleaf weeds and nutsedges in both pre- and post-emergent stages. This specialty herbicide delivers clean rows, strong yields, and consistent performance across dozens of labeled crops. Whether you’re a commercial grower or an agricultural professional looking to streamline weed control, Sandea is a game-changer.

Tools Needed

A handheld pump sprayer, spray rig, chemigation system, aircraft such as a helicopter, or other ground application equipment can be used.

How to Use

  • Step 1: Determine how much Sandea Herbicide to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. Find the square footage by measuring the treatment area's length and width in feet, then multiply them together (length X width = square footage). For acreage, take the square footage and divide it by one acre (square footage / 43,560 sq. ft. = acres). For turfgrass sod, apply 2/3 to 1 1/3 oz. of Sandea Herbicide per 100 gallons of water per acre. Do not exceed 1 quart of surfactant per acre. For spot treatments with a handheld pump sprayer, mix 1/4 to 1 oz. of product with 1 gallon of water. Do not apply more than 2 oz of product per acre per 12 month period (includes applications to the crop and to row middles/furrows). Depending on the crop and where you live the application rates will vary so it's best to refer to the label for specific application rates and restrictions.
  • Step 2: Fill the spray tank with half the amount of water, add the required amount of Sandea, and then pour in the remaining half of the water. Close the tank lid and let the pump run to thoroughly mix before spraying.
  • Step 3: Adjust the sprayer nozzle to a coarse spray pattern, then spray no higher than 3 to 4 feet above the treatment area. For best results, wait to cultivate treated soil area for 7 to 10 days after a postemergence application. Wait 2 to 3 days after a post-emergent application for overhead irrigation.

Where to Use

Sandea Herbicide can be used for listed cucurbit crops, fruiting vegetable crops, permanent crops, field crops, alfalfa, artichoke, asparagus, fallow ground, okra, crop group 17, pastures, rangelands, CRP forage grasses/hay, rhubarb, turfgrass sod, grasses grown for seed, fence rows, fuel storage areas, lumberyards, tank farms, rights-of-ways, and roadsides.

When to Use

Apply before weeds are present. For post-emergent control, make applications when broadleaf weeds are 1 to 3 inches in height and actively growing. Treat actively growing nutsedge plants at the 3 to 5 leaf stage.

Avoid applications when crops are under drought, stress, disease, or insect damage. Also, do not make treatments when rainfall is expected to occur within 48 hours of application.

Safety Information

Sandea Herbicide is safe for people and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.

Keep people and pets out of the treated area for 24 hours after application.

The required days between the last application and harvest (PHI) are given in parenthesis after each crop name.

Special Considerations

Avoid leaks or dripping of the herbicide solution onto the crop as contact of this product to desirable vegetation could result in plant injury or destruction.

Use of crop oil concentrate or silicone-based adjuvants can result in increased crop injury and reduced yields and are not recommended for postemergence applications over the crop, unless stated otherwise.
