Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide, manufactured by UPI, is a versatile granular algaecide and aquatic herbicide that comes in an easy to apply hydrothol granule based formulation. This granule aquatic herbicide is very effective against a wide range of submersed weeds like coontails and also controls troublesome algae at the same time.

When properly used, Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide quickly dissipates and does not bio accumulate in either fish or the hydro soil. Therefore, this contact herbicide makes aquatic weed control more safer without effecting your water body or cause toxicity in fish.

Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide is fast-acting and effective in slow-moving water, such as drainage ditches and irrigation ditches. Since this product will not bind to dissolved and suspended sediment or organic matter, it can be used to control algae and troublesome weeds like pondweed in muddy or murky water.

Tools Needed

Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide is ready to use right out of the bag. The only tool you will need is a plastic scoop or granular spreader to distribute the granules or you could disperse the pellets directly from the container.

How to Use

  • Step 1: Determine how much Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide you will need by calculating the size of the treatment area. For aquatic applications, you will need to calculate the surface area acreage by measuring length x width in feet to get square feet and dividing by 44. You will also need the average water depth in feet of the treatment site by measuring different locations of the water body and dividing the measurements by how many measurements made. For submerged aquatic plants, apply Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide at 0.5 to 5.0 ppm (27 lbs. to 270 lbs. of product per acre foot). Use 0.05 to 0.3 ppm (3-16 lbs. of product per acre foot) on light to moderate infestation of planktonic and filamentous algae. Do not treat more than 10% of the area at one time with doses in excess of 1 ppm.
  • Step 2: Using a hand spreader or scoop, evenly apply the appropriate amount of Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide directly to the weed or at the edge of the water body allowing the waves to push towards the target area. Avoid contacting desirable plants and crop with this product as injury may result.
  • Step 3: Repeat applications when algae and aquatic weeds reappear per the product label rates. In quiescent, slow moving or flowing water treatments, do not apply more than 30 ppm per growing season, not to exceed 5 ppm per application. Do not apply more than a total of 5 ppm within a 7-day interval.

Where to Use

Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide can be used in quiescent, slow moving, flowing water aquatic sites, and in drainage canals, lakes and ponds. Waters treated with this product may be used for swimming, fishing, and irrigating turf, ornamental plants and crops immediately after treatment. Flowing waters treated may be used for swimming, fishing, irrigating turf, ornamental plants and crops and for livestock watering immediately after treatment.

Do not use this product in waters containing Koi or hybrid goldfish. Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide is not intended for use in small volume garden pond systems.

When to Use

Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide should be applied as early as possible after weeds appear or when they are actively growing and present.

Safety Information

Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.

Do not use treated water for animal consumption within the following periods: 0.3 ppm – 7 days after application, 3.0 ppm – 14 days after application, and 5.0 ppm – 25 days after application.

Fish may be killed by dosages in excess of 0.3 parts per million (ppm).

Special Considerations

Unless steps are taken to reduce the overall nutrients in the pond, multiple applications may be needed for full season algae control.
