Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide
Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide is an effective herbicide in granular form that provides fast-acting contact control of underwater weeds and algae on water bodies.
09/27/25
Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide, manufactured by UPI, is a versatile granular algaecide and aquatic herbicide that is an easy-to-apply endothall granule formulation. This aquatic herbicide is very effective against a wide range of submersed weeds and also controls troublesome algae.
When properly used, Hydrothol Herbicide quickly dissipates and does not bioaccumulate in either fish or the hydro soil. Therefore, this contact herbicide makes aquatic weed control safer without affecting your water body or causing toxicity in fish.
Hydrothol is fast-acting and effective in slow-moving water, such as drainage ditches and irrigation ditches. Since this product will not bind to dissolved and suspended sediment or organic matter, it can be used to control algae and troublesome weeds like pondweed in muddy or murky water.
Tools Needed
This product is ready to use right out of the bag. The only tool you will need is a plastic scoop or granular spreader to distribute the granules, or you could disperse the product directly from the container.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Hydrothol you will need by calculating the size of the treatment area. For aquatic applications, you must calculate the surface area acreage. Do this by measuring the length and width of the treatment area in feet, then multiplying them together (length X width = square footage). Once you have the square footage, divide it by 44 to find the surface area acreage (square footage / 44 = surface acre). You will also need the average water depth in feet of the treatment site by measuring different locations of the water body and dividing the measurements by how many measurements were made. For submerged aquatic plants, apply at 0.5 to 5.0 ppm (27 lbs. to 270 lbs. of product per acre-foot). Use 0.05 to 0.3 ppm (3-16 lbs. of product per acre-foot) on light to moderate planktonic and filamentous algae infestation. Do not treat more than 10% of the area at one time with doses in excess of 1 ppm.
- Step 2: Using a hand spreader or scoop, evenly apply the appropriate amount of product directly to the weed or at the edge of the water body, allowing the waves to push towards the target area. Avoid contacting desirable plants and crops with this product, as injury may result.
- Step 3: Repeat applications when algae and aquatic weeds reappear per the product label rates. In quiescent, slow-moving, or flowing water treatments, do not apply more than 30 ppm per growing season, not to exceed 5 ppm per application. Do not apply more than a total of 5 ppm within a 7-day interval.
Where to Use
Hydrothol Granular Aquatic Herbicide can be used in quiescent, slow-moving, flowing water aquatic sites and in drainage canals, lakes, and ponds. Waters treated with this product may be used for swimming, fishing, and irrigating turf, ornamental plants, and crops immediately after treatment. Flowing waters treated may be used for swimming, fishing, irrigating turf, ornamental plants and crops, and livestock watering immediately after treatment.
Do not use this product in waters containing Koi or hybrid goldfish. This product is not intended for use in small-volume garden pond systems.
When to Use
This product should be applied as early as possible after weeds appear or when they are actively growing and present.
Safety Information
Hydrothol Granular Herbicide is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.
Do not use treated water for animal consumption within the following periods: 0.3 ppm, 7 days after application, 3.0 ppm, 14 days after application, and 5.0 ppm, 25 days after application.
Fish may be killed by dosages in excess of 0.3 parts per million.
Special Considerations
Unless steps are taken to reduce the overall nutrients in the pond, multiple applications may be needed for full-season algae control.
